Any tips on how to remove a wiper arm if it's pretty seized on?!

Featured Replies

Driver's side wiper arm needs adjusting down a tad, it just clips the A-piller on fast motorway driving, creating an annoying knocking noise

whipped off the cover, undid the bolt, sprayed some Penetrating oil in there, but can't get the arm off the spindle.

tried yanking, screwdriver underneath to lever (careful not to break thru the scuttle!), shouting, swearing, even tried using a hammer to jimmy the arm up and off the spindle.

total ass ache at the moment.

I'm hoping the penetrating oil may work it's way down over the next few hours if i'm lucky?

I doubt it, they fix to tapered splines.

Mine were a pig to get off, lift the wiper away from the screen and rock the bit that goes over the spindle and hopefully it will come off.

Or you could get a little puller

cud try gently tapping down on the threaded stud with the nut slacked off whilst pulling the wiper up at same time...if not you can get a proper puller which clips round the wiper while pushing down on the threaded stud.

Could try rubbing in some fairy liquid with a nailbrush or a spare toothbrush? Might just need some agitating. On a similar subject, I got some new blades and fitted them after I realised Skoda hadn't changed mine like they said they had when it had it's MOT. Now I CAN SEE and I'm not going to die if it rains! :)

thanks for the replies guys.

that little puller thing looks pretty nifty too

Lots and lots of WD40 did it for me.

Get a puller, will save lots of time and avoid any damage.

Smear spline with copper-base grease before reassembly.

Dont pull it towards you just try pushing it up ;) forcing it off the splines ;)

cheers for the replies,

I managed to get the arm off today, seems like the penetrating oil worked its magic over 24hours, all i did was undo the arm and wiggle it about a bit today and it just popped off.
