if i was to purchase the licence on its own (if possible) i can borrow someones retail version and use that to install? correct? not correct?

If i have to purchase a full joblot.. where is cheapest place ath the mo to buy? retail.. not oem as im building my self

You could legally borrow the media if you have a legal license.

Be aware that there are different cuts/versions of MSFT OE install disks, some of which may reject your license key.

Yes. You pay for the key (the 16 digit code) not the disk. That's why Microsoft never uses any copy protection.

Get OEM, if you are building it yourself you are the OEM.

Only difference is the packaging and support, as the OEM you are expected to be your own support.

Yep, I was selling an OEM version of Win Vista on eBay and the listing was pulled. Re-listed it saying you would get "an item of hardware" and it was ok, chucked a 5 port USB PCI card in that I had lying around.
