new back axle

Featured Replies

Hi all, just a bit of background info, owned the Vrs from brandnew (2005) it's got full dealer service history. Anyway moved from England to Ireland (Kerry) 3 years ago and lets just say the roads are made for tractors not cars with low profile tyres. The car just had it's 90000 mile service and I pointed out to them that the back tyres were wearing on the inside edge, then came the bad news, the back axle's bent probably from all the pot holes.

Money says I have do it myself, ,I managed to download a proper garage manual for L200 pickup but can't seem to find one for the Fabia, would an hayne manual be detailed enough to change a back axle.

Any help or tips would be great.

The Haynes manual has a section on removing and refitting the rear axle assembly. They rate it as a three spanner job, it's in section 10.13

10.13 is correct.

Have had a bent back end in the past (frost-spin-backwards-kerb-ditch-hedge.... and stop and remember to breathe). In my experience you tend to bend one side or the other. And tend to knacker one tyre. 90K miles on shoite roads, I'd bet on wear and tear on the stubs, rear wheel bearings etc. Your description reads to me like more of a wear and tear thing than a bent it, broke it job.

PS: Have you seen the thread where Basil fitted a camber correction kit to the back of his Fabia? Basically his was built slightly wonky and there's not normally any adjustment. By using and aftermarket kit, you can correct any minor issues.

Well I sat in the back while the wife drove and to be honest I thought it sounded like it was the wheel bearings, I could'nt find any play in the outer bearings, so I got underneath and if the axle bent you can't see it by the naked eye. I supposed you put your faith in the mechanic. Anyway I'll check out the thread.

thanks all

My incident was on a Citroen AX GT. On the car, with wheels attached, it was obvious that the rear RHS wheel was tucked under and toed in at least double. Off the car, the axle looked much the same as the replacement one. No obvious signs of distress...
