1.8Tsi Oil

Featured Replies

Want to drop in on the local dealer on the way home to get some oil just in case I need a topup on my hols. What should I be asking for. Cars just done 98 miles.

Will it be some fancy oil like the diesels have in ?

Depends on whether you're on annual service or variable service. I'm on variable service and use 5/30 fully synthetic oil. Having said that, I topped up less than half a litre in the first 20 months I had my car so you shouldn't have any problems with 98 miles on the clock.

Check your oil level every 1000 miles to see if it's using any oil. Some engines in first few months use up to 1 liter per thousand, but not all. No need to worry for now.

No fancy oil, I am on fixed service and use VW 502 00 oil, while if you are on flexible service you need VW 504 00. I keep a liter of Shell Helix 5/30 in the boot if needed. I have added about 200ml for 3000 miles i have done so far.

thanks guys. Other thing is the oil is not far above the min mark. I just feel a bit uncomfortable with it their. I prefer it just below the full mark ! Car is on fixed servicing but will it have long life oil until the first service ?

IIRC you need VW504 in that engine, so having a bottle of that won't hurt. VW dealers will sell quantum longlife III.

VW group recommended oil tends to have both the 504 and 507 codes on it. I'm taking a litre of Havoline special offer stuff from Morrisons on my French trip.

Just my two pennyworth - but I would seriously suggest that anyone with one of these engines runs it on FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL TO VW SPEC. The variable servicing schedule uses the words 'Longlife Oil'; but this is in fact fully synthetic. And change it once a year as well to ensure maximum engine life.. If however, you want to just top up for the time being, use oil according to the service plan; (ie whats already in the engine.)

The service plan code will be on the cars sticker in the boot and the dealer should have written 'variable' or fixed' in the service log. See the handbook for the code.

As the engine has clearly been designed to run on fully synthetic from day one for optimum performance; I wouldn't personally entertain anything less. The most important thing that you can do to any car to keep it running well is to regularly change the engine oil and filter, using the spec of oil that it was designed to work with.

Seems to me that as these engines have been designed to run on synthetic from day one, they must have been bench run in; because if they haven't, bore glazing would result. (That's one for the technos out there.)

Agree with fully synthetic even on fixed servicing i.e 5/30 VW504/507. Used exactly half a litre in 2,500 miles, most of that around 1000 mile mark and hardly any since.

Agree totally with this. Mine has used a little (must check it again !!) I think I have bought enough for life (top ups) with the Asda 5 litres of Mobil ESP 5/30w bought at a ridiculously low price.
