Steering wont lock,

Featured Replies

My steering has stopped locking, WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?

Can you hear the lock spring back to the steering column when you remove the key? I would probably start by using a little graphite powder in the ignition lock to see if that helps free it up.

Can not hear nothing at all,and I do not know how they put those bolts in to take it apart,I really dont want to buy another and start using two keys ether :S

Haven't seen the bolts ,but I'd imagine they're the security type -they come with a nut attached ,and during fitting ,the nut shears off .I've taken a couple off , but whether it's wise to mention how I did it ,or how the trade do it on a public forum ? Suffice it to say ,I'd not place a great deal of faith in a steering lock after that.If you buy some steering security bolts ,you can work it out .

The sheared bolt needs drilling out to replace the ignition lock. Whether it's worth replacing depends on the level of crime in your area and the likelihood of theft (in the UK people would not see the Favorit as a valuable car, but would probably think it's easy to steal and there's the sort who steal cars simply to drive home or in circles etc). The steering lock is difficult to defeat with the usual brute force method as demonstrated in a post by Captain Sisko after an attempted theft of his Favorit. The door locks and boot lock are miles easier to replace than the ignition to keep the same key, it's just tedious taking the door panels etc off.

as above , twice done it with a small chisel .Once on a jammed lock, other time ,daughter's boyfriend had lost key .Again ,suspect there's more security with the immobiliser, which IMHO would still be functional ,with the key present in car .I know the security is a bit more hi tech ,but Mondaneos now use key less ignition systems ,the key only needs to be in the car .

Teflon Tom describes how to do it as the pro's do in http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/143731-felicia-power-steering-retro-fit-thread/

Just look for how to take off the steering lock .

Ok everyone thanks a lot for the input,Just replaces it with a second hand unit two keys now oh well,it was not all that important, main reason I did is I need the lock is so as not to loose the rack and pinion box setting which from time to time needs tightening, and has to be irritatingly taken off to get to the bolt .

For anyone who is having same problem as me this is how I did it in and an alternative way by removing the column and lock all together, first take steering off, steering column trim, unplug switches, remove switches, indicator stopper and steel switch holder, then remove the c-clip from the steering column shaft and pull the column out from the shaft(note the bearings in the column were quit worn and came out with no effort what so ever so the column might not come out, it depends on how worn the bearings are,so take into consideration you might need some kind of puller, pusher ),reattaching the new column and lock was the revers as removal but you must compress the column spring by compressing the bottom shaft and column in order to re-insert the c-clip,I used a large pipe wrench.
