damp smell after turning off a/c

Featured Replies

Hey there,

When I turn off the a/c and go to non a/c air, I get a damp smell. Is this normal? What's causing it?

[don't think I have leaks and it's no worse before/after rain]

Thanks,

Stu

Probably a damp pollen filter or bacteria in the system.

Get an aircon cleaner from halfrauds for about £10. Follow instructions

Also worth checking the pollen filter under the glove box

As part of its normal function, the air con system, as well as cooling the air, will also dry it. There should be a pipe leading from the bottom of the air con matrix in the car leading to the ground. Try running the air con with your car stationary over some concrete and watch under the car, after a few minutes you should be able to see a dripping coming from somewhere underneath the windscreen area, if not then a damp patch should soon appear under the same area, this is the condensation from the air con drying the air, if not then it is likely that the drain pipe is blocked, meaning the water can't get away, hence leading to your damp smell.
