Running in speed ?

Featured Replies

Just coming upto 200 miles now in our new 1.8Tsi Scout and have a few hundred miles to do this weekend.

‘Some say’ it’s best to vary the speed when running in. The majority of the driving will be on the kind of A road where you can stick the cruise at 60 and rarely alter it. Does varying the speed mean between 55 and 60 on an A road ?

Running in has two schools of thought,

Thrash it from the start for more power

Do as the manufacturer recommends for better oil consumption.

As long as you don't go over 4500rpm iirc then you can use varying speeds

Well i've thrashed from start and not used a drop of oil in 5.5k in my 'oil burner'!

Followed running in process in Bora and had to put a litre in before 10k.

I got 3000+ miles on my Scout TSi and i've done the following:

1. First time driving from the dealer to home, drove 20 minutes, oil temp up to 98C then found a nice stretch of road and did Gear 1,2,3,4 up to 6000rpm both ways on motorway, then came home.

2. First 200 miles, changed all speeds around 4K rpm, varying speed was 50,60, then let it go down to 40, then change gears 3,4,5,6 nice and smooth up to 70-80miles then after some time done this again

3. From 200-500 Miles, regular 5K upshift/downshift through the gears, not used cruise control, not driven in same speed/gear more then 30 min.

4. From 500-1000 miles vary the speed, gears and revs, some fun overtaking up to 6000rpm but not hold it there.

5. From 1000-2000 miles, drove normally, but once week i went through gears 2,3,4 up to 6000rpm, never drove on any gear continuously below 2k rpm, thought the engine can go nicely on 1400rpm on 6'th.

6. From 2000 miles, all good and normal driving, once a month to 6000rpm to clean up the bad petrol, drive in 6'th with at least 1800 rpm and not labor the engine. Overtaking at max 5k rpm.

During these times, i added 200ml of oil just to be on the safe side, thoughti could hardly notice the oil level falling on dipstick.

I went offroading, and on long gravel/mud/water roads so at 5000km (3100miles) i changed the oil, oil filter and air filter, and thought the book says 4.6litres oil, it took 5 litres due to new filter to get the dipstick to max level line.

Good luck.

I have not needed to add any oil to my CR170 since the day I drove it out of the dealers 6 1/2 months and 15000 miles ago. I wasn't particularly careful during the supposed run in period, but just made sure that the engine was up to temperature before giving it any beans...
