Can anybody help? :0(

I brought a W reg Fabia 1.4mpi a couple of weeks ago, it has low milage, with full history. Great little car, apart from a couple of things.

Problem 1: I drove it at night for the first time a couple of nights ago and noticed that the headlights flicker on idle and also when the clutch is pressed when changing gear. The tail lights are also doing the same.

Problem 2: The oil filler cap doesn't seem to fit properly, and the oil is blowing out of the top. The oil cap only seems to fit to the engine cover and not the engine itself.

Look forward to reading any replys!

Hi and welcome to the site. Your first issue will probably either be the battery failing or the alternator starting to fail which means the battery won't be charging properly and so your lights will flicker at low RPM's - once the engine is up to speed the flickering will cease. Do your radio, instrument and interior lights flicker at idle too? Get the alternator/battery checked and replaced if necessary.

I wonder if the engine cover has been refitted correctly. The other solution is to remove the engine cover (2 10mm nuts one under badge and one under another small cover) and use the spare oil cap pushed in to the underside of the cover, leaving the engine cover off.

+1 on alternator or battery for lights flickering, also check the drivebelt is tensioned well.

Great, more problems that I have to check. Thanks for the knowledge guy's  Bloody car!

You're welcome, haha.

mpi's are the best!

mpi's are the best!

Yeah theyre not a bad little car are they - Ive had mine over 5 years now and the only time it ever let me down was when the 6 year old original battery gave up the ghost.

My only gripe with the MPI is the relatively poor fuel consumption (and the emissions and tax that comes with it). I could probably have the 2l furby and get about the same fuel economy, but with more pleasing performance. The 1.2htp is probably the more sensible choice. Engine designed by Skoda engineers just like the 1.4mpi, rather than VW hand me downs.
