Where's this squeak coming from?

Featured Replies

When still or moving I release the brake pedal or the handbrake, and there's a loud squeak coming from the back somewhere. I've just had both rear wheels off and had a look inside the drums, but it wasn't clear where the noise was actually coming from. I used a bit a grease where I could see moving bits but this didn't cure it. Anyone any idea which bit is most likely to be causing this?

might be where the brake shoes are mounted on the back plate youll have to take the brake shoes of and use a bit of copper silp grease

you wont be able to see where they touch the back plate until you take off the shoes not something you can do if you dont have the right tools

you could try spraying some brake cleaner to see if that helps

haha, i mentioned this to djaychela earlier, the infamous felicia rear brake shoe squeek, they pretty much all do it, it's the pivot pin where the shoe attaches to the backplate as said above! :wonder:

TBH all you really need is some pliers/mole grips and a cable tie/rubber band. Put the cable tie/rubber band around the wheel cylinder/pistons - this is not strictly necessary (I never had any problems from not doing it), but prevents the pistons popping out. Undo the 2 pins with springs holding the assembly to the backplate (push and twist with pliers). Release the shoes from the lower pivot point (mole grips), then it should be possible to remove the whole assembly - with the handbrake cable left attached. If you're not replacing the shoes don't bother removing the handbrake cable and just rest this somewhere clean (a box or something). You should then be able to grease the back plate, and refitting is the reverse of removal, making sure to remove the cable tie/rubber band once refitted.
