1.8 TSI?

Featured Replies

Hi , Could I pick the brains of owners of the 1.8 TSI engine for a bit? Id like your thoughts on this engine please , as I have found this car http://www.skoda.net.r66.co.uk/carview.aspx?id=601024753 and I'm quite interested , although it is only one of a number of options I have for my next car. Thanks.

It's a totally fantastic unit. I've had mine since 25th July and only just hit 650 miles.

It's very smooth and very tractable. It also goes although I'm limiting myself to 4500 for the moment.

At slower speeds it feels like a 350 SLK merc I had.

Overall I'm delighted with the engine. Theirs talk of it developing 180bhp from the factory instead of the 160 quoted. Mine certaintly feels like it.

Any specific questions then ask away.

Thanks , do you use 95 or 98 RON petrol in it?

Looks a nice car. I bought an Octy a while back with the 1.8Tsi engine. It is a very, very good engine indeed. I understand that the cam is a chain drive too. All the reports indicate that this is a soundly engineered engine. It is a really smooth engine with a beautiful power delivery. I'm not a youngster and I have had all sorts of cars from V8 Rover P6b's to a Marlin I built myself and I have to say that this engine is quite exceptional indeed. As regards mpg, I'm not really typical, because I live on the Isle of Wight, but mine seems to be averaging a shade over 35mpg, which seems really excellent considering the way that this car goes when you put your foot down.

One of the reasons that this car has such a lovely power delivery is the torque and it's best understood if you look at torque using the traditional measurement of foot pounds. Most petrol engines have a torque figure that is roughly about the same a the BHP, quite often a bit less.

Here's some examples of some nice petrol engines - Lexus IS - Straight 6 - 2litre - the old one - 153bhp 144lb of torque.

New Lexus IS petrol 2.5 V6 - 204bhp - 186 ft lb.

Octy petrol Vrs 2ltr - 200bhp and 206 ft lb of torque.

Here's a couple of good ones from the past - Cavalier Sri 2ltr 16v 150bhp and 145 ft lb. That was a nice engine, a real goer, it had sodium filled valves and I believe Lotus designed the head.

Another good old favourite from the dawn of history..... MGB 'B' series 1800cc - 95 bhp - but 110 ft lb. The torque figure exceeds the bhp by 15% and we all knew how well that engine pulled in it's day.

Now look at this 1.8 Tsi -- 160bhp but 184 ft lb of torque. The torque figure exceeds the bhp figure by 15% - a massive amount by run of the mill petrol engine standards.

No wonder it goes so well.

Oh Yes - it runs on regular 95 ron unleaded in answer to the earlier question.

Excellent , thanks very much , sounds very interesting - I might have to view this at the weekend.

I have done 20K in 9 months, 1.8TSI + 6 Speed box, absolutely made up with it, pulls well and get about 44Mpg on the motoway and circa 40 Urban using normal unleaded, however a heavy right foot drops that significantly :)

It is basically the same TSI engine that is in the VRS, just a shorter stroke. Its VW designation is EA888 are is their latest in the VW stable but without the variable valve lift that some Audis get.

I thought it looked particularly good when matched to the 7 speed DSG gearbox ie even better consumption etc.

I have ordered one and for £19K where it is the L&K spec, 7 speed DSG, paddle changes with Bluetooth steering wheel and VRS style boot spoiler I am keen for it to arrive. I cannot think of any other make or model that comes close to it in spec for less than £25K never mind less than £20K.

Could not face another diesel company car and get a fuel card anyways (not totally sure of tax implications) but this car ticks all the boxes. Only worry is it might be replaced by 1.4 TSI - 180 hp which may date it but I have not heard this is going to happen but seems a logical progression to me.

Just looked at your link.

Don't think the car is a TSI but maybe a TFSI ie the earlier engine, EA113 Maybe. Still good, I had a 1.8T in an early VRS and it was great.

L&K is a great spec. Let us know if you go for it any how it works out for you.

EA888 run fine on 95 octane, earlier engines have knock sensor I recall and can run better with occasional 98/99 octane, one of 4 was a common receipe as it all get mixed together by injection system anyways.

All I know is its a 1.8 TSI with 160 PS and its a 57 plate? I didnt realise they changed - I dont think its the old 20V engine , I didnt think they used that in the Mk2?

Search Ea113 and EA888 on this website and google it and you will get all the differences,

It's almost as good as the Subaru 1.8 turbo in the 'L' series.

Correction, it's a shade more economical. The subaru had bl**dy awful brakes, but I did 134,000 miles in mine and as long as I didn't have to do emergency stops, I didn't hit anything.

My Scout pulls, stops, tugs and zooms along with my caravan behind. All it needs is an auto box and my wife will get shot of her Forester..

Ahh ok , looks like the new engines cmae on stream around 2008-09 , although Ive only ever seen the 2.0 discussed , I suspect the 1.8 version would shadow the 2.0s changes though.
