Oil Pressure switch question

Featured Replies

hi folks, maybe somebody else can shed some light on this, it's driving me mad now trying to figure out the logic of it.... :wonder:

ok, as you know i dont have the original engine in my pickup, basically i can't figure out how to make the oil pressure warning light on the dash switch off when the engine is running, i've got a set of the official skoda current flow diagrams for a felicia and pickup and as far as i can tell, the oil pressure warning lamp gets a live feed from the instrument cluster on one side of the bulb, and the other side is earthed via the engine block to complete the circuit and hence the lamp comes on...

now the thing is, the oil pressure switch i have is doing the opposite to what i expect, and the logic behind it is good too, when the engine is off the oil pressure switch is open, and when the engine is running the oil pressure switch is closing and bringing on the warning lamp which is the exact opposite of what i want. i know with 100% certainty that i'm getting the correct oil pressure at the top of the engine because i've tested it with an oil pressure testing kit/guage, i've tried a few other pressure switches and they are doing exactly the same

question is, is there an alternative oil pressure switch i can use? the ones i were supplied are for the vw polo engine, does the felicia with the aee vw 1600cc engine have an oil pressure switch which is specific to that engine or is it the same as the polo one's i've got?

does anybody fancy testing which way thiers switches for me to double check i'm not being a total bell-end... mine switch is open when the engine is off and closed when the engine is running, but i suspect it should be the other way, help!!

edit: when the pressure switch wire is not connected the lamp is permanently off

Hmmm... the Haynes wiring diagram confirms what you say - one end of the bulb is directly attached to the instrument panel feed (switched live through fuse 19), the other end is earthed via the switch, so the switch should open when the engine is running. Looking at my old Estelle manual it's the same setup, so it looks like it's an inherited Skoda thing and you do need a switch that's 'backwards' compared to the VW ones. If it stops tipping it down I'll nip out with the multimeter and check mine to make sure.

Well, I'm a bit wet but I'm right :D Looks like you need a Skoda switch. However, whether it's specific to the 1.6 or shared with the 1.3 I don't know.

Edit: The plastic body of mine is blue, if that's of any significance.

thanks for that, the skoda switch wont fit the vw engine, so it looks like i'm going to have to order one from tps specifically for the vw engined skoda instead of the cheapo ones from gsf, they are only about £8 anyway, should have gone there first :wonder:

oh yea the vw ones work backwards mate... is yours the small tapered fine thread or the m14 one? either way a skoda one should be available to suit it tho..(trying to think how we sorted ours now lol)

in the smallblock vw engines they all use an M10x1.0mm (metric fine)

An SPDT relay could be used to make the circuit open when the oil pressure switch is closed, and closed when open.

Looking at what is being said , perhaps we need to look at an engineering solution - no available switch to do the job- so why not look at designing an interface ,to invert the signal from the switch to the lamp . I'd say something like a simple relay - operated ,it breaks path to lamp . It's got the fail-safe idea that if relay fails ,then oil pressure will show fail .I'm not a mecchy techy -I'm a lecy techy, with a lottaexperience on cars - 40+ years of tinkering /rebuilding .

some sort of not gate? i think there is a much simple solution, there WILL be a switch i can use from some car

As I was picking up some bits from my dealer this morning, I thought I'd check for you - they can still order them and would want £11.92 for it.

yea an older non injection fav one will do the job nicely

all sorted now, thanks for the input guys.. i used an oil pressure switch from a 1.6 petrol felicia and it works.. job done
