How to Access Air Filter

Following on from my first thread regarding a knocking noise.

I have just been doing some maintenance and I removed the pollen filter and hoovered up a load of leaves that fell out. Now I am looking to inspect the air filter in the engine compartment, however I can't see any sign of it!

I am assuming it is somewhere under the plastic engine cover?

Can someone please tell me the correct procedure for accessing and removing the air filter?

It is a 2005 1.2 Skoda Fabia estate.

surely it will be on the same place as the vrs's on the right handside (as you look from front) above the battery

If it's the same as SWMBO's old 1.2htp, it'son the underside of the engine cover. Get the cover off, turn it over, unscrew all the screws you can see and it's underneath the smaller plastic cover. Don't buy the filter from Halfords because their catalogue is wrong.

I started doing this today ie undoing all the screws but after loosening a few I was overcome by a daunted feeling and I quickly tightened them up again. Damn bad design if you ask me. :thumbdown:

I've just come back from looking at the car in the garage and the engine cover just pops off - I was looking for some kind of hidden catch or screws as I didn't want to snap anything! There was also 2 rubber pipes that needed to be disconnected.

As you say after that it was just a few screws and it was part of the underside of the engine cover. The filter was clean - I was just checking up on the garage's claim of "full service" with the purchase, also I'm a keen DIY servicer so I just wanted to get to grips with where things are located and how to trouble shoot stuff in case of the dreaded breakdown...

So far, I am one happy owner!!

Actually, I happen to agree with you. I have just come from a very reliable Mk4 Astra and that had a separate air filter that was clearly visible in the engine bay and it was undone by unclipping 4 clips in 5 seconds - no tools required. Plus it had a cold air intake direct from the grille which is a far better design than taking warm air from the engine bay. I have seen a mod for the Skoda for a cold air intake but to be honest I like to keep things standard.

It was easy to do though so don't be daunted about getting your hands dirty and giving it a go, just be careful and take it one step at a time, think logically and don't rush, get a Haynes manual if your unsure of the steps.

I used to have a Rover 220D. I think that was just a case of 4 clips or so needing undoing. You've got to be in the mood havn't you.....Anyway, well done. Where is the pollen filter? I'll have a look at your first thread. Maybe it says there.

No my first thread doesn't say - only the fact that I cleaned it. I found all the info from searching another thread on here, it is much easier than the Astra - the Astra involved removing the glovebox etc and added about 15 minutes to do the job! For the Skoda it was just a case of going under the passenger foot well, finding the rectangular plastic cover for the pollen filter, sliding the clips to the right place to allow the plastic cover and pollen filter to drop out - clean or replace and remember which way it came out. Because I didn't have the part I just hooved my existing one out and also loads of leaves fell out at the same time so it was worthwhile - the blower is noticeably more powerful now.
