Skoda Fabia 1.4 MPI problems

Hello all (by the way, anyone from Portugal?),

I own, since 2001, a Skoda Fabia 1.4 MPI (comfort).

Recently I found it "drinking" to much gasoline... It's doing a 9,50 lt/100km average... What others users think about it?

I also can see that sometimes, when driving in "ralenti" the car sometimes "cof", is that normal?

Hi Miguel, 9.5 litres per 100km equates to about 30mpg in UK terms, and even though these cars are not very economical I would hope for a bit better. It's difficult to say what may be causing this, however here are some things to look at. If the air filter and spark plugs haven't been changed in a while I would start there as these are cheap and easy to do. It would also be worth cleaning the throttle body. Does your temperature gauge register in the middle and does it take a while to get there? A common issue on the 1.4mpi is the thermostat failing due to poor design of retaining clips inside it, and temperature senders (on the thermostat housing) are also a common thing to fail, both of which can increase fuel consumption. One forum member reported a fuel efficiency increase after replacing the MAP sensor, which is located at the back of the throttle body.

I am not quite sure what you mean by "ralenti" and "cof". But if you mean when not moving with foot off gas, the engine shakes or misfires a little, this is normal for this car.

My car regularly averages 30mpg, if I drive it on motorways 35-40, if i drive it in town 28-32. If I drive with a heavy right foot 24-28.

I don't expect much more from the engine tbh.

Another mip owner here - I get about 30 - 35 outta mine, maybe a bit more long haul

Yep sounds about right, wish I'd gone for the 16v! I've saved a bit on insurance though.
