Troublesome window seal?

Featured Replies

When I collected my car it was fitted with wind deflectors, done during PDI. The first time I operated the passenger window and went to close it the anti trap feature operated and sent it back down. On inspection the deflector appeared to have moved so I sent the window up again holding the deflector out of the way. On closer inspection, it appeared the deflector had been broken on fitting and left, like I might not notice. I have removed and refitted the driver side one as this one prevented the window closing once but this one wasn't damaged. It is a tricky job but since then it hasn't given me any touble. I went back to the dealer after they had ordered me a new one (a 60 mile round trip) and they broke it trying to fit it. Two weeks later they fitted another (another 60 mile round trip) and then broke that one too. They got this one in but broke it when they wound up the window! I was losing patience by this time but they redeemed themselves by offering to collect my car and leave me a loan car while they look at whether the window seal is preventing the deflector sitting properly. While there they will also reset my DSG box to base settings as it seems to have bad days where it is either very hesitant or takes up the drive with a kick and it is very difficult to drive smoothly??? The other thing I will mention, following the post about handbrake work being required at the first service, is that it already has a lot of travel, 8-9 clicks and it has only covered just over a 1000 miles.

Can't comment very much on the window seal as I don't know anything about the deflectors, but that doesn't sound right does it? Sound as if they are sorting it though. Lummox mentioned in an earlier post on another thread about the handbrake on another car not having adjustment covered by warranty. I confirm this is the case, amazing as it may seem. But at 1000 miles you must draw the attention of you garage to this fact as such a large amount of handbrake movement is not normal and should have been dealt with at PDI. They will want to charge you for it if you leave it. There is a system that allows dealers to claim for work such as that at the time of PDI if the work is serious enough. 8 or 9 clicks is much too much (mine is 4 clicks) and should have been dealt with at PDI. No car I ever PDI'd came out of the workshop with any mal-adjustered brakes and we had quite a few that often were not correctly set up. Definitely chat to your dealer.

That recent post about the handbrake is what got me thinking. I would normally have left it until the first service but it seems daft that you can be left with a large-ish bill for adjusting the handbrake. I always thought they took up the slack on the cable but if there is little adjustment available presumably it is drums off job to sort it at the cam end?

The rear drums are self adjusting, but sometimes they don't, due to stiffness/newness or improper initial calibration on the production line. It doesn't happen often. To fix it the rear drums may have to be removed or though not necessarily. My own Skoda main dealer charges £34 plus VAT to sort. Fatbloke...please let us all know how you get on please. I'm sure you won't have any problem though.

I got my car returned today, to my surprise, I expected it tomorrow at the earliest. The lad that brought it back said he had adjusted the handbrake as soon as he drove it in the workshop, before he'd even seen my note about it. He reset my DSG to base settings, there were no errors on it so it may be that it had 'learned' it's settings while being driven by an auto virgin  No charge for anything! They finally successfully installed the problematic wind deflector too

They always get there in the end! Fantastic. Enjoy your motor.
