Crunching noise when starting in 1st

Hi there, have just recently bought vrs second hand so I'm not sure whether this is normal or not. When is start off in first gear there is a definite crunching noise just as the clutch is being engaged. It's more pronounced if I hold the car with the clutch on a hill. This doesn't seem to happen if I start the car going in second gear. And it doesn't happen all the time, only if I haven't used the clutch for a while whilst driving, it also rarely happens when the vehicle is cold.

My car is a September 09 tsi, and I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions, as don't want to seem a fool for taking it to the garage if the noise is normal.
