Bad oil leak from cam cover

Featured Replies

Hi all, new here,

I'm helping a mate out with a terrible oil leak - he's got oil on his spare wheel well :)

The leak seems almost certianly to be from the cam cover. Two attempts have been made to rectify this.

We are fitting a new gasket - should any silicone or any other type of sealant be used anywhere on the gasket, and is there a tightenening order for the cam cover bolts?

Any hepl much appreciated, thanks.

what car?

What engine?

Oops, sorry. An Octavia 2 with the 2.0 diesel engine.

Actually, i think we've sorted it now. My pal got a diagnostics man to look at poor starting from cold, who changed the glow plugs, but not realising that the glow plugs were under the cam cover he didn't obtain a new gasket beforehand and used the old one which caused an oil leak.

My pal then applied some silicone to the gasket in the region of the leak but to no avail. So i've fitted a new gasket and torqued the cam cover bolts to 10nm and tightened them is a guesstimated sequence. This seems to have stopped the leak.

The car iss till not great to start from cold though, so the new plugs don't seem to have done te job. Is there a timer or a controller of any sort for these plugs?

I have to say i know very little about these cars and there is no Haynes manual for them either.

Is the engine using any coolant?

If it is there could be an issue with the cylinder head - porous or cracked.

IIRC, the glow plugs log a fault if they are misbehaving so a diagnostic check should highlight that.

No, it was simply losing oil at a heck of a rate. We had to wipe down the whole underneath of the car including the spare wheel well. And the oil has destroyed his front drive at home. ;(

Interesting comment re the glow plugs.
