Removing chrome grille surround

Featured Replies

I want to spray my grille, but there is a fair bit of prep work (strippping the chrome, sanding, primer) before I can even start with painting.

As per this guide... http://www.fabia-vrs.com/technical-info/colour-coded-front-grille-fit/ would it be possible to re-attach the grille but leaving the chrome surround off until I have completed the work?

To me it looks possible, but obviously I dont know for sure cos I've never done it before.

In a word... Yes.

The trickiest part of this job for me was threading the bonnet release lever back through the grille upon

re-assembling. You have to kind of twist it as you feed it through, tricky but no major headache .

I know its obvious but make sure you refit that too while you complete the spraying or

your bonnet will be stuck shut :D It's the kind of c*ck up I'd make TBH

You can shut it properly without the lever only while the grille is off...

As you can still get your hand in of course.

Also don't remove the metal arms as they really help while you are aligning it for re fitment.

Don't disturb them and you can't go wrong.

HTH.

Oh god that has got me worried, sounds like something I could easily do and then think "oops"!

It's easy. Just put the lever thru at a angle as if your pointing it up. Takes a few mins max

I contemplating spraying the grille silver to match, but having one fin red, the next green and then black where the vrs badge would normally go, and taking the badge off. Thoughts? Maybe someone could do a photoshop of it on a silver car?

eg this one >> DSCF4753.jpg

i want to spray mine black or silver also but could with a spare chrome part to spray before hand.... emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

I'd rather keep the £40 and run without it for a few days

Matt

Just vinyl wrapped the chrome bit on my GF's vRS, only cost £4 and looks great!, I'll try and get some pics later in the week when I next see her :)

It's only about 6 screws... Once you have done it once it will only take 5 mins the second time.

Also vinyl wrap will work better and be more durable if it goes right behind the chrome.

It you just cover the surface you'll catch it every time you wash the car.. Water can get under it then it will start to

lift. Once it begins to lift it will last 5 minutes when the wind gets under it on the motorway.

All the edges of the vinyl becone internal if you go right round the chrome rather than just doing the face of it.

The best stuff out there is Di Noc carbon vinyl by 3M. Google it for 1000s of links and pics. Its not cheap

though. You just missed a group buy. iantype-r ( Check my friends list...) did mine about 7 months ago

and it still looks new and easily withstands 3 figure speeds with no lift... Pm him for more details...

You don't have to take the grill off, just use a flat head to ping the chrome bit off. Can be done easy enough while on the car

I had my chrome grill painted black by a smart repairer. Just to let you know you don't have to strip the chrome, sand and primer!!

Just get some red scotch and some prep and blend liquid and scotch the hell out of the grill and the paint will stick to the chrome! No need for primer.

Matte black Fablon, used it in the past to do some flower graphics for my GF's old Yaris, cheap as chips and although it doesn't feel that sticky going on, it lasts and for that price you can't complain at all!

Yeah if u just pop the bonnet you can still get the the plastic clips, ping em off and out it comes. Just careful not to break them

The two directly beneath the badge will be most likely to break in my experience.

They are different to the othe snap fastenings around the chrome trimpiece. Longer and more spindly.

I broke 1 of mine and I was UBER careful. Proceed with caution

I had a friend take mine off. a few of the trim clips were a bit of a pain and the badge is really well stuck on. takes a while to pick the sticky foam off. i just used a scotch pad on the chrome then primer, paint and clear. i thought the paint was a bit fresh so you can just re attach the main part of the grill to the car. then the next day when the bonnet was shut just pushed the surround back into place.
