Getting started with vag com

Featured Replies

Hi,

I bought the cheap cable and share ware copy of vag com off ebay to read fault codes after getting charged £50 by a garage to check an engine management light, then more to fit a sensor which didn't solve the problem.

I've got an engine management warning light on now and I'd like to see what is causing it.

I've installed the software, plugged in the cable and gone to run the test from the options screen as directed here

http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/option_screen.html

I get an error message when I select the usb port saying interface not found.

It seems to connect when i select com 3, but nothing else works on the program with that selected.

I have tried restarting the computer, removing and re installing the program, installing VCDS instead of VAG com and now I'm stuck. I've had a search of this forum, but I don't really know what to search for.

I want to know what the warning light means, and how to fix it. Is VCDS going to help?

Car is a 2001 octavia VRS, laptop is running xp, cable is usb to obdii and I'm in Nottingham

Thanks for any help

Martin

Its your cheap cable, get a proper ross tech one and it will work fine.

Aston-

I thought that might be the case but it does say in the release notes for VCDS that it will work with non ross-teck cables.

Chris-

I have tried all of those except

"Is the car's ignition switch in the ON position?

Is it plugged into the correct serial port? Some PC's have the ports mis-labeled."

Does the first mean the car is running or just has the key turned to the second point? I tried it with the car running

As for the second one, Its in the USB port and I tried all 3 USB ports. Not sure how to check that other wise.

Cheers for the help

Martin

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but how much does a decent cable cost? Is it easy enough to get a free copy of the software?

This Cable works with This Software

Gendan are a Ross-Tech Distributor and this cable has been mentioned as compatible by Bruce from Ross-Tech

Current Cable cost £19.95

VCDS-Lite is available from RossTech as Shareware. To register (and unlock some extra functionality) will cost $99 approx £64

Oh wow thats very cheap, I was expecting it to cost a lot more. Do you think the extra functionality is useful to a novice? I would like to plug it in and it to tell me if there are any faults, that's about it.
