Where are DTC English definitions stored?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a rough running problem with my '02 Octavia RS. I grabbed my Autel Maxscan VAG405 scanner & plugged it in to read the codes. The screen on the scanner lit up but it was just blank. Long story short, my scanner was broken.

I bought another identical scanner which arrived today. Plugged it in & it worked; coming up with a 17705 & a 16514 from the engine. Unfortunately the screen also said "DTC definitions not found! Please refer to vehicle service manual!" My previous VAG405 would give me a description in English of the fault. i.e. Pressure drop between turbo & throttle valve.

Now I know I can easily look these definitions up using the net but my aim in getting this scanner, as before, was so I could leave it in the car & use it when away from home if necessary.

I can't phone the vendor until Monday but I'd like to know, is this an issue with the scanner or are the English language definitions stored in the vehicle itself?

I suspect that the scanner is not up to date s/w wise.

Thanks in advance

Darren

The definitions are stored in the scanner. The scanner may not have definitions for every DTC. If you can connect the scanner to a PC, then there maybe a way of updating the software on the scanner.

Correct, the diagnostic tool or hand held device is the one which contains the "number to text" tables. VW updates their tables quite ragularly which is why we do the same with VCDS, have you contacted Autel about an update for their device?

I got a little book with my hand-held scanner, but as often as not, I just look up the RossTech wiki on my phone...

Have a look at the 'sticky' threads at the top of the page.
