The first OIL CHANGE

Featured Replies

I have only done about 3000 miles in my new 1.4 TSI a would like to change the engine oil myself.

I have never done this on any Skoda before and would like to receive any tips or do's and don'ts that would be of help.

I'm particularly concerned with getting access to the sump oil drain plug and removing the oil filter.

Thanks for any forthcoming comments.

My first question would be why? At 3000 miles it doesn't need changing, and from what I've read the oil should be left in a new car until the specified mileage/time as it helps the engine to bed in and then only after that should it be changed at more frequent intervals (I think I heard that from Honest John).

Other than that the sump plug's easy to get to once you remove the undertray which is held on by about 11 Torx screws. Not sure about the 1.4 TSI but the oil filter on my 2.0 CR TDI is at the front of the engine to the right, and easy enough to get to.

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks for the reply Bob.

I was always under the impression that it was beneficial to change the oil in any new engine, after a small mileage, as the were possibly a number of small deposits left over from manufacture.

However from what you say, to change the oil so early, could in fact prove to be a disadvantage, as the original oil aids the bedding in process. I would have though at any correct grade new oil would always be preferred to the existing sump oil.

So is there something in the factory fit oil that is not present in any replacement oil?

Can anyone tell me the size of the torque screw and how many there are?

Regarding the oil filter I have no problem locating it but my concern was in the unscrewing and removal.

Thanks Bob.
