Just a thought, i have a spare grill with my car, and i might try painting it red to match the car as a mini project. Can someone give me a run through of exactly what id do?

Cheers

Scotch the chrome as much as you can for the paint to stick.

Take badge off or mask it up.

Clean grill with some sort of spirit wipe to clean wax/oil etc off. (V. Important)

Spray about 4-5 light coats of red onto it, leaving a couple of minutes between each coat.

Wait about 20 mins for red to dry enough.

2 thick coats of laquer after that, leaving about 10 mins between each coat.

It's all about the timing of the paint drying. Don't rush it. Leave it overnight to dry once laquered and don't touch it. It might look dry but it won't be.

Don't use hair dryer or heat gun on the laquer!! It will put bubbles in it and make it misty! ;) Good luck

primer before painting

primer before painting

Why? Your using the scotched chrome for the paint to stick to. You only need to primer if your taking the whole chrome off down to the plastic. The scotched chrome is acting like the primer, it's smooth, keyed and flexible.

The chrome on the grill is not real chrome (polished metal) it's just paint.

If your painting over paint you don't need primer.

Chrome is actually chromium plating not polished metal. The grille is actually electro plated with chrome (yes you can electroplate plastic) not painted so you do need the primer. The best primer to use is an etched primer.

Hope this helps

Pip_vrs - Did you colour code your door handles yourself or were they standard red?

Your car looks like what I'm heading for, I've been toying with the idea of white wheels when it's been lowered.

V.Nice car

Oops. Didn't use primer on mine! My friend is a smart repairer and he didn't use primer on my grill the first time it was painted and it stayed on fine.

Each to they're own I suppose. ;)

The handles were standard red. Im in the process of taking my white wheels off, there not going back on. Ive bought a set of 'shiw wheels' which are bbs splits and im planning to just run standard wheels in black from now on. You can see my fmic piping too haha

Thought I might try some photo shopping, so hope noone minds that they aren't real. I wanted to see what a variety of colours might look like on a black car.

I think the red looks kind of silly, but the blue could probably be carried off. Especially if there were some other blue bits.

Looks nice  I've tinted my tailights too.

Is there not any law about tinting fronts tho?

Sorry for getting a little off topic :giggle:
