2nd gear crunch

Featured Replies

Hi there, I have recently noticed a slight crunch when changing down into second gear, does not happen in any other gear.

Any idea what could have caused this, :S

Does it happen every time you go down into second? Does it happen when moving up the box too?

If it happens each time, does it only do it when changing down sequentially? Try block changing down from 4th to 2nd (where conditions obviously allow!) to see if it occurs then.

Finally, double de-clutch down into 2nd and note what happens. If the symptom is cleared at this step, I'd suspect syncromesh on the 'box isn't quite right for 2nd gear.

I have the exact same thing happening with 3rd gear on my 9 month old vRS. Doesn't do it changing up, but when changing down there is a definite "graunch". If I have the window open it is quite audible from outside. I think it's a dodgy synchro ring and I'm booking mine in to have it fixed in the next week or two.

Cheers,

I took my car to the dealer today to demonstrate to them the “graunchy” 3rd gear. I went out with their head mechanic for a good run and although the gear didn’t graunch too badly for him, he did notice it, but was more concerned about excessive play in the clutch pedal, and suspected a fault there. He took in into the workshop for a closer look and sure enough I need a new clutch master cylinder. Apparently there’s a plastic part somewhere in the actuating mechanism which is an achilles heel, and often breaks, and mine has. He told me it’s a common fault, but can't say I've noticed any posts here about it. It may or may not sort out the graunch (I suspect not), but after they’ve done that next week to eliminate it if the problem still persists they’ll take the car back in and look at the gearbox. Can’t say fairer than that.

Bob.
