fun mot failure

Featured Replies

dropped my little fun off at the garage today for its mot , it failed on a brake pipe , light out , little bit of weilding on the back , nothing to big , and Emissions !! its bin using a bit of oil latley , and now and then theres a cloud of smoke behind me !! the bloke at tha garage said plugs 1 and 2 looked chocked up which haven't bin in long . then he said he wouldnt waist his time spending money on it to get it though its mot !!

now this is my little truck ,i love it , its not mint , some like them some dont , he was one of the others that dont , a few words were said between said man and my self and i think the out come was i cant take it back there to get the work done. he wasnt very helpful anyway and i dont relly know what would need to be done to get it through its mot and pass the Emissions

can anyone help me out

I'd check the compression and maybe look at a leak test this will tell you if the rings are ok. Would be able to pick up another engine pretty cheap if worst come to worse I would think.

Its got to be worth rescuing surely, I still regret selling mine and would love to have it back.

Is it the strut top area in the back that needs welding? Pretty common for causing issues.

yeah its the strut top that need welding, i could know of one for sale if i cant get it moted ! he he ....

Doesn't seem like he was very helpful! Im no expert but surely it can't be that bad in terms of emissions. Does it say which part of the emissions test it failed on any of the paperwork he gave you (if any!) ?

Sold..lol

Mind you mine was quite different,

i'd chuck a replacement engine in there and put it back on the road... it's funny how some cars fail on stupid stuff sometimes when the guy at the garage just happens to be looking for exactly what you've got :wonder:

if it's burning oil it WILL be running far too rich, if you were hard core you could strip the engine and re-ring it with the engine still in the car, but a set of rings is about £150 from vw/skoda dealer, plus you will need to take the cylinder head off etc

did you sell yours on ebay ? im sure you put some pics up on a thead of mine ! slamed down with some fat alloys on her ....

as for papper work my good man on the emissions !! i can have all the paper work from the mot station if i go and pay for the testing of my little truck . which i will do tomorrow ,, in the heat of the moment when i had this bloke over the counter ready to bite his head right off i forgot to pay for said mot test !! but i am a fair man and not one to rip people off so will have it tomorrow all being well .......

under condition A part one ..

1, takes money gives paper work ,

2, makes no derogative comment on said vehicle

3, reframes from calling said owner of vehicle " some sort of hair dressers car" ha ha , he must of thought i'd taken my missess car in to be moted bless him !!

4,dose not press charges on said counter incedent

condition B part two ie; me

1, get all appropriate documentation

2, reframe from shoutinig very loud , in an aggressive manor,

3, still apply for retest with in said 7 days

4, give good report on said garage once mot is achieved { not said garage but mot station will surffice }

things like this pi55 me off

he obliviously has no idea!!

people like him just like doing MOT's as it's easy money! come to diagnosing the problem and there clueless!

i have a short temper and would probably have done something i regret

i think the pickups are uber cool 8)

did you sell yours on ebay ? im sure you put some pics up on a thead of mine ! slamed down with some fat alloys on her ....

Sounds like it, air ride, sooo cool.

ah TeflonTom , how much would you charge me come play hard core ? he he

I'd check the crankcase breather hose for any traces of oil too - my 1.6 was running rich, sooty and had oily plugs when I got it. Aside from overfuelling due to a broken thermostat, the oil separator was also gunged up and forcing oil up the breather into the intake. Took it off and sprayed half a can of brake cleaner through it and it's fine now. Still uses more oil than anything else I've ever driven, but the handbook says anything up to 1 litre per 600 miles is normal :o

ha, not quite sure i offer the services you are after there i'm afriad :giggle:

but if it's your car you want fixing, if you weren't like 200 miles away i'd help you repair it for beer tokens

Hope you get it sorted! Don't listen to that MOT guy - the Fun is definitley not a hair dressers car!!

i went and took the money for the test with no problems and got all the paper work and the read out for the emissions. he said if i can get it sorted in the next ten days hes got no problem putting back though but we will see !!

i then took it to a friend of a friend who looked at the read out and told me some things that went straight over my head but it didnt sound to bad so i just left it with him to have a look and let me know the out come . he did say on the worst case with a new lump its only going to cost around the £300 mark !! and i dont think thats to big a price to keep a little fun running for a few years longer

what were your emissions readings then?

  • Author

i left all the read outs with him , he called me today said hes changed oil filtter, air filtter, flushed through, new oil , but thinks it would pass if i had a new cat on it !! now i dont know a lot about the old internal combustion engine but surley thats not fixing the problem with in the engine and why its doing it in the first place . i dont want to go down the new lump path if mine can be sorted out

without seeing your actual emission readout it's hard to say what the cause or cure may be

here goes

oil temp 80 'c

fast idle test

speed 2560/ min

co 0.66 % vol

hc 153 ppm

lambda 1.02

2nd fast idle test

speed 2880/ min

co 0.59 % vol

hc 155ppm

lambda 1.03

natural idle test

speed 1170 /min

co 3.90 % vol

summary results

oil temp 80 pass

fast idle test fail

speed 2450-2850 pass

co 0.3 fail

hc 200 pass

lamb 0.97 - 1.03 pass

2nd fast idle test fail

speed 2450-2850 fail

co 0.3 fail

hc 200 pass

lamb 0.97-1.03 pass

idle speed fail

speed 500-980 fail

co 0.5 fail

from those results it looks like a faulty catalytic converter, but if you take that out for a good thrash and get the cat red hot that may go through, get them to test the emissions whilst it's still red hot..

when the HC and Lambda readings are low like that, the only possible thing that will cause a hi CO reading is a failing cat
