312MM Brakes and Insurance....

Featured Replies

Just bought some 312mm Octavia brakes from this very site, literally 30 minutes ago. (Cheers Wardy!)

Now my question: Do they need to be declared to my insurance outfit? Has anyone done so here?? what was the increase in premium?

I am already paying a fortune in Insurance on my others cars! :(

Yes they do - it's a modification from standard spec

yes i have - otherwise my insurance would be invalid

no idea what the increase was though as it was lumped in with all my other mods

In theory it should actually make you safer so the policy price should go down.

However the ability to stop better makes an insurance company think you'll be going faster so more likely to crash in the first place hence the rise!

The b*stards!

Yep, you will have to declare it, any modfication to the car from standard spec will have to be declared.

Yes, you must declare them. If you don't you invalidate your policy and they WILL know. They don't want to pay out remember, and the blokes that check cars over get paid to do it for a reason.

As said above it seems counter intuitive to suggest making your car stop better will make it more likely to be involved in an accident, but hey ho. I did a quote with Endsleigh with brake upgrade, and without. Without i get £980 p/a fully comp (20 years old, driving 1 year, 1 year NCB) with the brakes it puts the yearly premium by £50 for me.

Speak to Adrian Flux and Chris Knott

Ask to speak to the modeified/performance section. Remeber to mention Briskoda membership

Just about doubled my engine power, and insurance went down by £50 B) thanks to Adrian Flux

As above, they'll need declaring

But depends on your insurer. I'm with Brentacre and any such modifications on the policy don't affect the premium. So I've added suspension, brakes and the like for no additional charge. This is the stage when it pays to be with a specialist

The only addition that makes a difference to the premium is a remap.

With Elephant, I rang for a quote on 312's, and they said if its making you stop quicker and safer then they would not increase the premium, but that was all before you snuck in with your offer to Wardy! :D

Some insurance will actually drop the premium for uprated brakes.

For my Brembo's it went up £7 through Elephant!!!

just what is the POINT!! :dull:

haha, it cost you more than £7 to ring them.

I put fast road pads on before I eventually got my 312s, and when I rang to enquire about needing to declare them, the lass at Elephant asked how much my BRAKE HORSEPOWER had gone up by! Bless.

With Brentacre now, although curiously was turned down by Elephant when I went to a remap, and Chris Knott and Adrian Flux couldn't cover me. I say 'curiously' as all of them use Highway as underwriters for modified cars - the joys of an SK postcode, I guess...
