Fogged up headlight

Featured Replies

Another job for the list on Tuesday when it goes back in - my passenger side headlight fogged up last week and now it's watermarked on the inside. It's a 2005 spec vRS with xenons. Anybody else had this happen? Likely cause and likely solution? Bought some Silverstars to go in the main beams yesterday in case they need to take the lamp unit out - kill 2 birds with one stone that way!

Just out of curiousity...what are these? Manufacturer of bulbs? or something else?

Cheers

Osram Silverstar bulbs are the best standard-wattage 50% brighter upgrade bulbs you can buy - as voted by auto express and several chav-wagon magazines. Having had them before in H1 and H4 fitments (along with various other allegedly uprated bulbs, plus some 100W and even 130W bulbs  ) I believe they are the best bulbs you can buy.

Cheers :) Don't have Xenons unfortunatley as I think they are pretty good from a hire car i had a while back.

Thanks for enlightening me though :)

Are the Silverstars available in H3 format? Thought they were only available in H7 for the Fabia which is for dipped beam? Stand to be corrected though :D

Yep I'm running Osram Silverstars on my Fabia for dipped beam and some Philips Rallye 100W's for my main beam. Can't recommend this combination highly enough, especially if you live in deepest darkest Hampshire ;)

Chris

How much are these silverstars out of curiosity? And do you have a link as to where I can get them from?

Thanks

Can be found on Powerbulbs. Excellent service plus they throw in some free sidelights I think :D

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but i didn't think the bulbs on a car with xenons were swappable that easy. H7 bulbs are just conventional bulbs that run off 12v. A xenon bulb runs off a special unit producing 24,000v. Also i had the fogging problem on my 2005 fabia with xenons so booked it in to be looked at along with the rattling gearlever and on the day of it going in the flaming fog had cleared up! :parhmph:

Think there's a bit of confusion in this thread. I'm not after changing the dipped (xenon) bulbs. I want to change the main beam bulbs, which are not xenons, they are regular H7 fitment bulbs when the car has xenon dipped beams. But it is a right pig of a job due to tight access behind the lamp units. It is defintely an H7 bulb in the main beam on a xenon-equipped fabia, I know because I managed to get at the one on the driver's side but took one look at the passenger side and wimped out :o but if the garage are maybe taking this lamp out anyway then perfect opportunity to fit the new bulbs.

And both the philips and osram bulbs can be bought cheaper on ebay than they can from powerbulbs, for those that are toying with the idea.

Cheers

PS the fog has also cleared from the inside of my lamp unit. But fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) watermarks have dried on the inside of the polycarbonate lens and are clearly visible when the light is on, so I should be able to avoid being fobbed off with "it's not fogged now so what's the problem?"...

I'm worryingly cynical, I am... :D
