Annoying Noice from Rear

Featured Replies

I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on this squeak that i am getting from the O/S rear of my car,

Sometimes for example when iam crawling in traffic say under 10mph i get a annoying squeak coming from the rear of the car, i have checked the calliper disc and pads etc all seem ok iam just wondering if anyone else could give me any pointers

cheers

Spray some wd40 on the bottom of the rear springs, if it goes away you may have a broken spring, that's what happenend to me didn't realize till mot time

I lost an inch or so from a spring end too, common problem.

I was getting a rattle/squeek at low speeds that I was sure was a loose bit of interior trim in the boot.......turned out to be a knackered rear top mount.

Thanks for the replys, yes i was aware that springs is a common fault,

Its strange though i only began to notice it when i changed my alloys from the standard ones to VW RS4 alloys so i checked for rubbing etc but all seems fine,

How can you tell if the top mount is goosed?

cheers

Sure it is not rear brake squeal? This is common also

Funny as I have Rear brake squeal only on passenger side rear, so annoying and will end up stripping down caplier soon.

Funny as i have RS4's on as well. I suspect a lazy caliper

You can test the top mount by getting someone to push the boot up and down while you look under the arch at the mount. The piston should not move at the top where it joins. In my case you could see 3-5mm of play and it made a squeeky/rattley sound.

Right update time i couldnt live with the annoying squeak anymore so yesterday i stripped the calliper greased the piston and cleaned it all up and had a good look at the spring and shock, everything seems ok no cracks in the spring etc, so i put everything back together wheel back on and i thought i had fixed the problem it didn't make a noise yesterday and today untill i was coming home tonight and it started squeaking while moving slowly it wasn't doing it all the time but i could hear it occasinally, if anyone has any ideas what i could check next as the noise really nipps my head!!

When the noise is there if you put your foot on the brake does the noise go straight away or is it still there?

Yeah mate when i put my foot on the brake the noise does disapear,

i thought i had fixed it when i had greased the calliper at the weekend but its still here,

It sounds like a friction noise then, did you clean up all the cailper faces(where the pads sit on) & did you put some copper slip on the back of the brake pads? what is the brake discs like? are the scored or corroded at all? i always clean up the pads (the face that touches the disc) with a bit of emery cloth when i strip & clean the brakes on a service etc. also are the caliper slides frree moving?

Yeah i cleaned up all the faces greased the pads greased the piston on the calliper the pads are good, the discs arein good condition aswell no gauges or anything etc, yeah everything is moving fine and cleaned etc this is whats confussing me. It will disapear for a while then come back then disapear and so on, Also if the car has been sat for a while it wn't make a noise untill the car has been on a good 10 15 min drive. Any more ideas mate?
