Perhaps there is hope for us ageing types

Featured Replies

This is an interesting experiment by BMW and it seems to be working!!! I can only hope that other businesses take heed

Given the ageing population, and the education system that seems to be turning out kids who expect to go straight into million pound jobs in media, I can see a lot more of this going on.

For my preference, as a 50+ worker, they might want to add a nice cup of tea and a sit down every few hours, a cardigan hook at each workstation and a monitor to remind what I was doing before I got distracted. :)

Whats it say Amanda couldnt see it very well , good idea tho to fit the environment to fit the workers rather than the other way round.

Well I am only in my late 40s, but I work outdoors all year round and spend a lot of time carrying heavy flight cases up and down tall buildings (with no lifts). My feet now ache at the end of a 12 hour day too and I need reading glasses. I can’t see how I will be able to carry on doing my job till I am in my late 60s :(

My first guess was that the Bavarian engineers finally had discovered the indicator stalk :giggle:

On a more serious note: it's not only a good idea, it's excellent. Volvo did experiments at two plants back in the 80's where a group of workers followed the very same car through the whole assembly line, rotating between different tasks and so on... but that was abolished since it was deemed less cost efficient :( German industrial workers are tougher to deal with, I guess. Can't imagine a Swedish CEO today speaking about "social contracts"...

From what I see on the news ,the kids have decided to cash in NOW

Cash in what? Their student debts? Their large mortgages in a low inflation economy? Their 'lead'-plated pensions? Their retirement at 68+ years old?

Back to the OP, it is all very well making things easier for their older workers now forced to work for longer but I'm assuming that as well as retaining older staff, BMW have a massive recruitment drive for young workers too. After all if they don't, who will be their customers in 20 years time? BMW are still recruiting massive numbers aren't they? I also look forward to seeing what the Chinese are doing in terms or old age and general workers' rights...

Employers are going to have to be more accomodating.

In planning terms is this the first sign that China, India and Asia's income and wealth exceeds the West and is beginning to exert more of an influence on corporate marketing decisions than ours ? Where do you think that all those revolving door economic migrants (Sorry asylum seekers) are going to go then for their jobs ? Time to start thinking about training the immobile native populations up again.

Will the chant on the football terraces now be . . Brother Crow, Brother Crow, Brother Crow (Here we go) ?

I am expecting a personal parking spot fro my zimmer before I retire.

Of course BMW is recruiting young people, but it’s great that they ar looking at taking better care of the senior workers too. If we have to work till we drop, then I would rather work for someone who made an effort to ease the suffering a little :) I applaud any company making a similar effort too.

The spending review this week sets the familiar tone for what were can expect as oldies.

Follwing the age old British establishment dictum, "If it isn't cruel, discriminatory and grunt stupid, we won't do it".

The question we should be asking ourselves, given the thought-processes (Or lack of them) that have been demonstrated, is our establishment sufficiently enlightened for the 21st century. On this weeks evidence, clearly not.

According to certain TV progs ( which I've not had a chance to watch)- it's their inheritance ,or better still anything they can get from their still living parents- like savings etc -any excess day to day cash .
