Warrantydirect vs Skoda aftermarket warranty

Featured Replies

I know there's quite a few topics on these warranties but I'm finding it difficult to get information specifically on the aftermarket warranty rather than the standard warranty. I bought my car from a Ford dealer who supplied the car with a six month warranty which expires next month and I'm trying to decide on what to do next. I realise this forum makes the potential problems look a lot worse but I'd feel better not having to worry about anything happening to the car.

The best warranty price I've seen for Skoda is two years at £450, WarrantyDirect today phoned me up with an offer of £330 per year for the higher price deal with the franchised dealer option rather than independents (£280). WD were claiming Skoda barely cover anything and specifically wouldn't cover any turbocharger or air con issues which didn't sound right from what I've read on here, I know the DPF isn't covered although I don't know if that is with Warranty Direct. The WD guy got rather stroppy with me when I mentioned the Skoda warranty and hasn't mailed on the quote as he said he would which I guess is intentional. He was pointing out a long list of items Skoda didn't cover however as the car is low mileage (around 21K at the moment) and probably only doing around 6,000 a year I don't think wear and tear items are too much of an issue but I do need to make sure the turbocharger and the aircon compressor are covered as well as the traction control unit. The guy kept speaking over me so I didn't get a chance to ask about the DPF, has anyone claimed for this with WarrantyDirect?

On WarrantyDirect specifically, would people recommend the franchised dealer rather than independents? Up here I don't know of any VAG specialists so I'm thinking I'd really have to go for the dealer version. Apparently that would mean I'd have to stick with dealer servicing though.

Thanks for any help,

John

I have a Skoda extended warranty (which is through Car Care Plan) the only significant exclusion that I can find (apart from wear and tear) is the Cat.

The beauty of the Skoda warranty is that they will do all the admin and chasing with the warranty company for you. Rather than you having to faff about with the 3rd party trying to get approvals etc (i.e. WD).

Probably best to call your local dealer and ask them to send you a copy of the warranty T&C's for an accurate comparison, rather than listen to the ramblings of a WD salesperson who is only interested in one thing..........his/her commission....... !!!

My WD warranty covered wear and tear (after the first 3 months) and the paperwork sent showed it covered the turbo on cars with it as standard fit.

I also had Franchised Dealer cover, but you can still service it anywhere as long as it is serviced in line with the requirements.

I went with them mainly on wear and tear being included, and thank god I did. Over 3 years of cover, they paid out 3 times what I paid them.

Only issue was on the first claim, as they offer a "15 for 12" starter policy. This gives you 15 months total cover if you don't claim within the first 3 months.

Down-side is that their computers restart the policy after 3 months and they lost my original start date. Tried to refuse a claim in month 5 as it appeared to them it was in month 2.....

Sorted in the end, and the system is painless as long as your garage uses the "one-link" computerised system for claims. Decision within and hour on any claim.

Hope it helps

Steve

WD are very open to negotiation.

I got their top-level cover (with Franchised repair) for £20/month after some haggling. This was at the end of July. Given I was quoted about £390 for the Skoda (CCP) warranty I think that's a good saving.

I haggled on the phone for the lowest quote they'd give me and wrote down the quote number. Then I e-mailed them that night (quoting the ref number) and basically said,'I'll take it if you can do it for £20 a month'. Got an e-mail back saying that they had 'consulted management' and would do it for that price.

Don't know if they still do it, but we had the Skoda Elita warranty when we bought SWMBO's Fabia. We had a fair few issues, suspension, electrics, battery, ECU, radiator, steering angle sensor, door locks/switches, door seals & piston rings. It covered the lot and we never had to have a "debate or negotiate" once!

Dealer tried to offer us an independent alternative & I'm glad we pushed for the Elita one! With hindsight even if it had been £390, we'd have still been quids in!!!
