least smokey fuel

Featured Replies

My MOT is due next month and the only thing I'm a little concerend about is the smoke test saying that after fitting the new FMIC it has reduced it massively but would like to try give myself a head start so out of all the supplys of derv which is the least smokey that people have found ? Myself I find V-power to give the best performance but is probabley the most smokey any advice would be good :-)

As far as im aware they only test it at idle. If not, i`d be suprised if it failed, i`v seen some mega smoke things pass MOT`s. Funny enough, i only started using v power after my dad said it reduced the smoke in his car, and its done the same to mine too! sounds odd it makes your worse :wonder:

I think I could possibly have the smokiest fabia on the forum according to most of the people who have seen/been behind it! :giggle:

To pass MOT I was running v-power with triple dose of millers. v-power reduces smoke on mine. I also took it for a 20 minute blast down the motorway before I took it into the garage. The fact that i know the guys at the garage where I normally take helps the situation and I always let them to take it for a blast if they want to. They love it when they do!

It passed last time with one advisory - *Engine smokes but passed the diesel smoke test*

Readings were:

Run1 = 2.96

Run2 = 2.78

Run3 = 2.63

Limit is 3.00!!!

TBH the guy says they dont put the probe as far as they should in the exhaust when they do mine as they know it will fail. 'Local' garages really do come in handy sometimes :thumbup:

The following is the procedure for diesel smoke testing during MOT:

A. All vehicles

1. Raise the engine speed to around 2500 rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower.

Hold this speed steady for 20 seconds to ensure that the inlet and exhaust system is properly purged. Allow the engine to return to idle and the emissions to stabilise.

a. assess the engine idle speed.

b. assess the smoke emitted from the tailpipe at idle,

c. rapidly increase the engine speed to around 2500rpm or half maximum . engine speed if this is lower and assess the smoke emitted from the tailpipe. Allow the engine to return to idle.

The average of the three acceleration readings will be calculated and if the reading is at or below 2.5m-1 for non-turbocharged engines or 3.0m-1 for turbocharged engines, the vehicle will pass this element of the test.

As far as im aware they only test it at idle......

Matt

You said that when I posted a thread about this back in March. :wonder:

If they only test it at idle then they are not following the proper procedure for an MOT smoke test. :thumbup: Admittedly they do take the reading at idle but only after they have just revved the engine for 20 seconds at 2500rpm as I have posted above.

Alright chill ya beans, when i read that thread after i replied, no one had said anything IIRC. I was only saying what i saw. I`v got a few mates with smokey diesels and none have mentioned it.

I've found the BP ultimate + millers to be the best combo.

But you'll need to run a tank of the stuff I reckon to start seeing benefits. Can't just fill up and be cured instantly. I reckon it needs time to clean the crap out!

Maybe giving your air filter a clean or popping a new

clean OE one in just for the test? Might help a bit.

Seeing as you've just had a VOSA Road Side Check and the only thing they did was make you remove that hideous sunstrip I reckon your car can't be that smoky!!

If you are still worried then do as the others have advised - start dosing your fuel with plenty of Millers, starting a good week or two before the MOT.

Pull the plug off the MAP sensor and it will be in limp mode and nil chance of smoke. ;)

Petrol doesn't make the car smoke! *

* Also doesn't make it run, You may want to disregard this suggestion!emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

It isn't that smokey unless you boot it to 4k but I remeber the first time it was RR pre FMIC it smoked like a bitch but as I said it has reduced it a lot since I fitted it probable abit worried as I haven't had to MOT any off my cars in the last 5 years as they all had mots on when I bought them or didn't need one so its been some time its due a service anyway and re taxing (expensive month ahead) so with all that it should be fine

I see you've got a piperX fitted, Give it a clean a couple days ahead of the test, And take it for a spirited drive! You'll sail itemoticon-0148-yes.gif

were abouts in bradford are you ? do you own a red fabia ? :giggle:

simple fix, wind actuator up half a turn ;)

I asked about this at work. IF it passes the first idle test below a certain level then none of the others need doing. :) I wasn't talking out my arse after all!
