Sick Mk 2 Octavia

Featured Replies

Octavia Mk 2 2.0tdi L&K.

Symptons - cut out and refused to start, no lights or mfd on dash. came back to life after about 5 minutes. Has had intermittent cruise control issue over the last year, which I have assumed is the switch fault.

Scan below, Any ideas appreciated. Dealers is an hour away so any help appreciated.

not being techincally gifted in any way and not really understanding CANBUS or VCDS etc my first reaction with those sympthoms would have been to ensure that my battery was properly connected.

How old is your battery?

Also check that you don't have a wire that's rubbed through anywhere and is touching the bodywork.

Edited by cheezemonkhai

As already mentioned my first port of call would be to check the Battery.

It is not the battery (I know this because it is my car!).

Once left for a while it starter as if nothing had happened. Pleantly of battery power. also a dead battery would not lead to a cut out. Once running, you can disconnect the thing and it will keep running (although not good for it really).

Next I would check cabling to engine fuse box and fuse box itself looking for damage/looseness. loss of power there would cause cut out and lack of lights MFD etc.

A dead battery can cause a modern derv to stop running as you need the ecu. It depends on how it's failing.

As before though wiring and see if anything links all the affected systems such as a common earth point.

I had another 2 engine stops yesterday, in my 5 min drive home. I've put a meter on the battery and it is fine. The charge rate from the altenator is fine too, so I am satisfied that it is not that. Intermittent failure of a connection is a possibility, but whatever it is could take a while to find. The MFD and dach warning lights were lit on one occasion, until I turned the ignition on and off again, then nothing for a while. Whatever it is takes 5 mins to recover each time. I would have thought a wiring fault would not be time dependent to rectify its-self, which is why I think this is probably electronic rather than electrical, however I will check the wiring this evening anyway.

The only other symptom I noticed this time was a large black puff of smoke on restart, so I guess it is overfueling at some point, either when it dies or when it restarts. I don't get this smoke on a normal restart.

To make things worse, I can't even get the Corrado out and use that instead, as the tractor is knackered too, and its in the way :'( .

It looks like you have had a battery/alternator problem at some time in the past. Some of the faults are logged as date: 2005.09.13 @ around 60K (various actual mileages) others 2000.00.00 @ around 30-odd K. That date is odd in itself. Have you had the ECU swapped out at any time?

These are old codes and are muddying the water. My advice would be to clear all of the fault codes, drive again and rescan after the next cut out. At least then you will have a more accurate indication of what might be causing the current problem.

Repost the result here and we'll be in with a shout. My initial guess is the ECU is unhappy for some reason.

Best Regards,

Mark

My Battery was showing fine on the tests, but two of the cells were shorting and every time they did it stopped.

Replaced and it's all good.

  • 4 weeks later...

I haven't had an oportunity to get it to the dealers yet, as it's going to be bit of an expedition. The trailer I borrowed bent, and wrecked my mid undertray  . As a last ditch effort yesterday, I replaced the battery, and no change. I'm starting to think it's an immobiliser problem, as the thing just stops and then won't even try to turn the engine, and there are no other noises when the key is turned. Everything else seems to function ok, lights, MFD, radio, wipers etc. Last night's lock out took nearly an hour to clear.

Hopefully my local friendly garage will be able to lend me a towing A frame to get it the 40 odd miles to the nearest main dealer.

If it was immobiliser I would not have thought it would effect dashboard lights (first post) as the immobiliser would (i think) only effect ignition ie the ecu would tell car not to turn over/provide fuel. I could be wrong though!

I would agree with cheezemonkhai, quite a few seemingly unrelated dtcs particuarly one that says "Short to Ground Intermittent" points strongly to an earth fault, battery issue or wiring issue. Perhaps there is some water getting in somewhere or some wires with damaged insulation.

HI

Did you clear all the fault codes after that print out you posted??? Did any of them come back stright away.

Lots of fault codes come up with people unpluging stuff with the ign on or while the engine is running.
