Octavia Estate rear tyres

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have an Octavia Estate 1.9D on an 08 plate. At 14000 miles the rear tyres started to make a drumming noise and the dealer advised that the tread was wearing very unevenly. They adjusted the tracking but I had to fit new tyres - not best pleased at that mileage. Now the car has done 30,000 and the rear tyres are getting noisy again even though there is loads of tread left. I gather that this problem is relatively common but Skoda don't acknowledge it as a guarantee issue. The dealer (Ashmore Green) did the first adjustment at their own expense but of course I had to shell out for the tyres. Has anyone any ideas how to prevent this? Happy to be pointed to earlier threads although I couldn't find any.

Thanks

Michael

Problem for the A5 chassis (A3, Octavia 2, Golf 5, Leon Mk2) also known as saw toothing.

Were some revised rear geometry settings, taking rear camber out a little. Seems to be a by product for independant rear suspension on these cars.

Loading and tyre pressures will effect how the tyre wears.

Michael, did your new tyres wear more evenly ? were they quieter ? make/model ?

sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm about to replace my rear tyres on a '58 octy 2 F.L. estate - which are super noisy, they 'drum' really badly. were bad between 20-45mph but now more noticable at 50-60 mph.

I heard that there had been revised suspension geometry for the VRS when it first came out, after very uneven wear at the rear. My tyres are not showing signs of uneven wear.

Is there a general suspension alteration to deal with the noise ? I'm trying to work out what might be the 'quietest' tyre to put on, if the geometry needs sorting too, I guess I could have this aligned at the same time ? I also wondered if the sports suspension I have (factory fit) makes the noise even worse ? or makes the aligement more critical ?

Regarding the 'sawtoothing' I can feel that the leading edge of the outside blocks of the rear tyres is taller that the trailing edge of the block in front (if that makes sense!) - but I;m not sure this is particularly unsual for car tyres in general ?

I would love to have a quieter car !

cheers,

Gareth.

Thanks for both replies to my post. It sounds as if Gareth has exactly the same problem as me. My car came with Dunlop SPs and that is what they put on to replaced the sawtoothed tyres. Subsequently I've been told that Dunlops don't do too well on these cars and that Continentals may last longer. I'd bne interested to know if anyone can confirm that or suggest an alternative.

Michael

ContiSport Contact 2's on mine are lasting very well.

I swapped the fronts to the rear couple of months ago.. 18k miles so far, fronts still at 5mm rears at 3mm.

HTH.

I changed my rear tyres at 55,00 with 2 mil left, fronts last 36,000, vredesteins all season and thats taxi work

the key to make your tyres last longer if you don't get the newer geometry settings setup is to rotate your tyres front to back, this helps stops the sawtoothing.

your best bet is to (when your ready) replace your rear tyres then take your car to a 4w allignment centre and get your rear geometry changed to the settings found on octavia-vrs.com

Last night I had a dream that my car was suffering from odd tyre wear on the rear. Also, the tyres were really skinny like a Model T Ford!! I remember feeling really annoyed to as I had recently had the 4 wheel geometry done and I still had wear.

Note to self: Must get out more and stop reading Skoda Forums !! :giggle:

There's a fair bit of discussion on this issue in this recent thread:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/170548-i-thought-the-problem-with-tyres-stepping-would-be-sorted-on-fl-vrs/

Including details of the revised values and advice on tyre choice (generally non-directional tread patterns will suffer less with this problem). Also guidance to check tyre pressures perhaps a bit more regularly than you otherwise would.

I had strange tyre wear too, it was not the tracking but the geometry, had it laser alligned adjusted and tested and then put on michelin energy savers and never had a problem since.

Hi Matt@the force. My Octavia Estate PD 140 elegance matches yours nearly (1st Reg 02/2006).

Been trying to find out what are best tyres for quiet life. Now on Dunlops "Fast response" and on any but the smoothest of road there is tyre roar which the car body seems to make worse. Will need to replace 2 tyres soon and would love to get a quiet car. Wife has hearing loss and her hearing aids just make the back ground noise so loud, it is difficult for her to have any conversation in the car. Did full alignment check (on Hunter kit I think) and all within manufacturers tolerances.

Asked Skoda UK Customer Services for help but they referred me to my local dealer. My local dealer no help nor prepared to give an opinion and referred me to tyre shops!!

Dealer also said same sound proofing on top Octavia models as in mine. I would be pretty miffed if I had bought a top of the range model and it was this noisy.

Can anyone out there put a finger on this? I would be grateful for advice on this. Otherwise, we love the car.

People do keep referring back to 'manufacturer tolerances'. Maybe Ross can answer this - are the geometry values dealers are now using the revised ones, as per Stu's page on the Octavia vRS site?

As for soundproofing, people have added Dynamat and similar soundproofing products to the spare wheel well, boot area and underneath the rear bench with good effect.
