Have I got a boost leak?

Featured Replies

Not sure about this, so I thought I would ask you knowledgeable guys (n gals)

I've got a Fabia 53 VRS & i been getting a strange 'whistle' like noise when initially accelerating when the turbo kicks in.

Its not a loud whistle & i can only really noitce it if the radio is off. It sounds like air/wind blowing through a small gap, but its never done it before so i'm ruling that out.

However, the whistle stops after the first few seconds of accelerating & it doesnt do it at hight speeds (60mph+) only at lower speeds in second or third gear.

I'm not getting loads of black smoke or extra fuel consumption - in fact i'm been getting less smoke since i stopped using Tescos Diesel a few months back!

So, anyone hazzard a guess on what it could be?

Cheers.

The "Whistle" is the turbo spooling up, not a problem. Sometimes you hear it and sometimes you don't, also depends on atmospheric conditions whether it whistles or not.

Blacke smoke indicates overfuelling, especially on mapped engines again not a problem, or a I/C pipe popped off/holed, needs fixing.

White smoke is not good at all, that be oil coming off the turbo. Don't drive until fixed.

Would the Turbo begining to whistle be the start of an underlying problem? I 99% sure its never made that noise before & i've owned the car 4 years.

Or is it normal wear & tear & it just be a 'normal' thing due to its age?

btw - its got a generic 175bhp remap on it that i've had for 3 years.

Not necessarily on it's way out. But if it progressively gets louder then there maybe problems ahead. All turbo cars whistle to some degree due to the high speed the turbo impellor spins. As I said atmospheric conditions affect mine like temperature and humidity and I guess the brand of fuel you are using.

One thing to note is, an older TDI engine such as yours that has been remapped will steadily build up soot deposits on the impeller, in the I/C pipes, the manifold and EGR vave and can be de-gunked when it gets bad but yours does not seem to have shown any symptons of that.

pull the turbo pipes together nice n tight n try it then to see if its any better, wont fix it permantly but gives you an idea, emoticon-0148-yes.gif
