Rust on Alloys!!

Featured Replies

I went to get my car cleaned and the guy who did it did an amazing job, however he could not get some of the rust off 3 of the alloys... Not happy

Turns out that its most likely the stuff i bought from Halfords that corroded them and left them to rust!

Does anyone know of anything i can use to get rid of the rust?

Also they refurb alloys for

Rust on alloy ?

There's been talk of some cleaning agents, corroding into the lacquer on the alloy, and allowing access to the raw alloy, by the elements. I've done some damage to my alloys and tend to just patch up the marks with clear lacquer from a touch up kit... more to protect the alloy, than try to repair the wound. :D

I didn't think alloys could rust??

Maybe oxidize but that would be a white coating.

Sure it's not something else like a thin layer of tar etc?

Or is it the paint bubbling? Or baked on brake dust?

Cheers guys, thats what i thought, rusting, what. They may have been corroded right through but the car is only 8 months old!

I will apply some elbow grease and see what happens. I did try already but it's impossible to shift.

Driving to Austria to go skiing friday so ill wait till i get back.

I would say that it's probably rust thats getting rubbed off the disks after standing for a while. I get the same problem, mainly on the back discs, but it usually comes off with a toothbrush when I'm cleaning the wheels.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo this stuff eats into the alloy laquer...

A better idea which a few people do is clean it up best you can and apply a wax onto the alloy as this will protect against brake dust.

had no idea. best revert to plain ole' elbow grease.

I think wonder wheels is best if the wheels are caked in brake dust, but as long as you clean the rims often enough, I find just soaper water will suffice

It's a mild acid isn't it IIRC ?

Most people don't use it now cause so many have found the laquer peeling off their alloys. I suppose once or twice a year would be OK but you got to make sure you get all of the stuff off.

I just use good old soap and water on mine then wax them occasionally which builds up a barrier to protect against dust.

I am sure Wonder wheels is good but I know of a few people who have had a bad experience with it at some point.

I swear by wonder wheels, used it on my octy vrs wheels at least once a month for 3 1/2 years and they still look like new with no laquer damage.

I agree wonder wheels is a very good product and brought my wheels up like new, but i'm not sure what the outcome would be if I used it every time I washed my car. I mainly use it in the summer months.
