Dynamat Xtreme - little effect so far!

Featured Replies

Have been trying to get rid of some of the road noise in my new vRs CR Estate with little effect so far.

I've done the boot floor, spare wheel well and under the rear seat with Dynamat Xtreme and a layer of quality carpet underlay. Also have the rubber boot mat fitted.

So far it seems to be a total waste of money. Just had a long trip to Manchester and had to endure the racket for 4 hours each way.

The tyres are Conti 2's which I understand are a bit noisy but the test drive I had before ordering way back in April also had them and from memory was a much quieter car.

I have read on here before that doing the rear wheel arches is beneficial but how do you get to them. I don't seem to be able to remove the boot side trim..the problem is the fixings for the boot luggage restraint nets which I can't remove. Any help would be appreciated.

I found the same on a pre FL to make a lot of difference, so I am surprised you've found little improvement.

The sides are worth a go, but to be fair, if you've applied mass to the panels, then it's probably something else on the FL causing the issue.

I have done the wheel arches (second skin damplifier and second skin luxury liner pro), it helped a bit but not a massively. My dealer printed out the official skoda documentation as to how to take it apart. Relatively straightforward.

However I think money would be better spent on changing the tyres. I too have continental sc2 and I have found them awful. I've replaced my front tyres due to wear with Michelin Pilot Sport 3s and have had a significant reduction in noise. Am looking forward to replacing the rears.

I think I'll wait until the tyres need changing and see what happens then.

I don't really want to start dismantling more of the car for no reason.

Good excuse for driving the car a bit harder to wear them out quicker.

How do you use Dynamat?

What did you use as "layer of quality carpet underlay"? was it proper sound barrier or any imitators product?

To prevent road noise you should use closed cell structure material.

I am helping my friend to soundproof his brand new fabia (as it was unbelievable how noisy tiny diesel engine may be) and will post some pictures later on.

Applied the Dynamat as in your first photo, certainly not like the Toyota!!

The carpet underlay was offcuts from my local carpet shop, the sort they use in flats for "extra sound proofing when you have noisy neighbours" quote. It's a fibrous material with a thick rubbery/bitumen type backing. If you think that is the wrong sort of stuff, what would you suggest.

I'm certainly going to change the tyres to Michelin PS3 next time as I drove a similar car to mine with them fitted and the difference was unbelievable. The Conti's are extremely noisy on some road surfaces but very quiet on others, most of the roads I drive on seem to be in the first category.

I just turn the music up louder. Short term is it drowns the road noise out, long term it deafens me...either way no more road noise! ;)
