Gearbox sticking from 6th to 5th

On my 05 plate Fabia vRs I've just noticed that when I change from 6th to 5th the gear seems to 'stick' and won't always slot into 5th - any ideas what this could be?

It doesn't happen from 5th to 6th or any other gear change combination other than changing down from 6th to 5th.

It feel as if the gear lever is hitting an edge of a tunnel (difficult to describe!) and on the motorway it's beginning to annoy me.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Check your gearbox oil level

Check the linkages on top of the gearbox to see if they are nice and snug (cable change)

There is no 'gate' at the gear lever end of things, so it is most likely the gear change cables need reset. There are two locking collars on the cables at the gear box end, and these need to be turned to lock them back. There is a small lever on the side of the box, and this is turned through 90 degrees while pushing down on the selector mech on top of the gearbox, the gear lever is then locked using an 8mm drill bit to centre it to neutral. You have to remove the gear lever cover. The collars are then unlocked and the little lever returned to normal position. Best have a garage do it if you have no experience with VAG boxes.

If your unlucky, the 5th gear syncro may be worn. It's not unknown for this to happen (more common on the Passat). That gets a tad expensive.

How often do you use 6th gear? if your use to local routes and hardly drive on the motorway 6th may just need using more often to loosen it up??

Cable box hydraulic clutch.

I do plenty of miles in 6th on the motorway so I don't think it would be a 'lack of use' issue. Also, it does not stick all the time, so every change from 6th to 5th does not suffer.
