Brake Disks

Featured Replies

Just caught glimpse of my brake disks as they were shining in the sun and noticed that on both the front disks towards the outer section, the disks arent smooth but have ridges in them. Is this something i should be worried about? Car has only covered 9000 miles so should there be a problam, is it something they would sort under warranty? I should have taken a quick photo but its gone dark now so cant.

small ridges are not abnormal, but big ones would have me asking questions.

How often do you drive the car - daily?

If not, when discs go really rusty as the pads wear the rust off small bits of rust end up embedded in the pads. Then as you brake, the metal to metal contact scores the discs.

Most discs have some kind of scoring, if they are really bad then change them. If it is only a bit and you are worried about it change the pads.

Brake discs are a wear and tear item, if you read your warranty document you will see that they aren't covered after six months.

As the pads contact the discs, both parts wear, and as the pads don't get right to the outer edge of the discs, a small ridge appears. This is perfectly normal, and when the discs reach minimum thickness they will have to be replaced, it's not an expensive job, particularly if you do it yourself, it's one of the easiest DIY jobs on a car.

Use the car every day, bought it as a demo in June when it had 2000 on the clock, now got 9000 miles. It may be nothing but all the other cars i have ever owned have all worn and not left these marks. Braking dosent appear to be worsened but to me it dosent look right.

Bugger, i am two months outside of 6 months of the car being new but i bought it in June so maybe they will take the 6 months from there?

Post a piccie and then someone can advise.

Or take it to a trusted garage and ask for their opinion?

I am not impressed by the quality of VAG brake dics in general. My car (when delivered new) had some machining ridges in the front discs! Does not affect braking once the pads bed in.

TBH I would not worry about it too much so long as theere is no pulling or juddering when braking.

When you do need to replace the discs then Pagid items can be purchased fairly cheaply from EuroCarParts and it a quick and simple job to replace them.
