New Scout arrived & new rails required:(

Featured Replies

Took delivery of New Scout yesterday and all been a bit of a wet squib as, as soon as I saw her I knew I had got it wrong!

I made a last minute change and went for silver roof rails and realise now on seeing Rosso Red colour with optional alloy upgrade being a darker colour. The silver rails just dont look right wondered if any one knows where to get second hand black rails or even the cost of new ones?

Oh and can they be changed easy enough?

Must admit I'm not a fan of "brightwork", but an easier option might be to get another set of default silver Proteus wheels so the rails don't look so different. You could run cold weather tyres or sell the upgrade ones (first refusal please) if you're happy with the new look. I'm in Edinburgh on Monday with a spare silver Proteus in the boot if you want to see what it would look like!

A cheaper option might be to pay a body shop to respray the roof rails in a colour that matches the alloys.

Lets face it if you can make an alloy any colour, I'd think you can do the same to roof rails too.

You might have to be a bit careful if doing up the rail kit if you ever use it to mount things, but then the same would be true of the factory rails in a black colour too.

Theres a lot of Scouts around now so odds are theres one in a breakers somewhere so worth a few hours trawling the net for s/hand ones.

Alternativly buy the colour you want & e-bay the old ones.

If you dont intend to use them a lot to carry stuff look also at respraying or can they be powder coated ?

Any Octy 2 Estate with roof rails would do as far as getting them from a breakers is concerned.

Powder coat would work a treat!

Might look good coded to match the car but needs photshopping first to be sure

I've read elsewhere on this forum that changing roof rails is a mission, involving removing the headlining (which contains the side airbags, if fitted), so painting rather than replacing sounds like the considerably easier way to go.

They are easy to change, just three removable sections on the rails, front, centre and rear, then unbolt them, there's a thread on her somewhere that shows you how to do it. Your best option would be to find someone near you with a combi with standard black rails and offer to swap, if you were near here I'd do it as I don't really care what colour my roof rails are.

My apologies, I stand corrected. This thread confirms it's an easy enough job. I think perhaps I was mixing it up with replacing the aerial, which I believe is a challenge.

I can understand why you don't like the silver rails with Rosso - choice seems to be swap or spray.

I bet someone on this forum would like silver rails over their black ones. They suit white and pale met silver colours to my eyes.

It would be an easy spray job with aerosol primer, colour and lacquer at home if you have space.

If you will pay for swapping you can have my black ones, the chrome ones will look good on my black skoda

Thanks guys for all the replies and offers and will have a think about it over the next couple of days to allow myself time to digest it all.

Half the problem I think is after waiting and travelling down to London and driving back in one swoop combined with so long spending time on selecting and changing my colour choices, options the final out come was'nt quite right!

I think the silver rails would have looked good with silver wheels but after upgrading wheels to the darker option, which I love. The overall picture just all looks a bit unbalanced and wish I had saved the cash and improved the look with standard rails.

Will post some pictures tommorrow and you can all give me your thoughts on the over all look with what im now telling people was my wifes choices :p
