Water Temp Gauge

Featured Replies

Last few days I have noticed once the car reaches normal operating temp the water temperature reaches halfway it usually would stay there, for some reason whilst driving the temp gauge drops all the way to the bottom (Cold) and then slowly starts to rise again after a few seconds, the car dosen't hesitate or overheat but its having me worried why would it do that? Its done it on idle as well a few times whilst parked, but it rises within 10 seconds??

Checks I have made Coolant is on the max line, and engine oil level is fine

Thermostat stuck open? how much is the part and is it easy DIY?

If anybody from experience has noticed this please could I have your input?

Thanks in advance

Thermostat or temp sensor.

Have you bled the system recently? I'd try that before replacing anything.

Temperature sensor requires replacement, if thermostat closed it would most certainly make the readout a lot higher,

because of restricted water flow.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

No work has been done on the cooling system since 59k thats when the water pump and cambelt were changed, now its on 70k not had any issues until now

How is the system suppose to be bled?

Thanks

Run engine from cold with water filler cap off.

This stops system from being pressurized and expels any air trapped in water system.

Any air will be ejected and seen in the header/filler tank, as bubbles.

Other members maybe alittle more clued up, but it's worked for me over the years.

There isn't much more to bleeding the system than above, other than setting the heater to 'hot' and waiting for the cooling fans to kick in and go off again. You usually do this at 'fast idle', but now it's a bit cooler, you may have to actually drive somewhere to get the engine up to temperature, being a diesel.

I'd say it's almost certainly the sensor, as a stuck-open thermostat on a diesel would mean the car would take forever to warm up. I did a guide here:
