No start ... 18009 - Relay for Supply Voltage Terminal 30 (J317)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have had this fault code reoccurring since I bought the car I think (2nd hand). Everything seemed OK though so I ignored it.

A while back the low voltage starter motor signal wire snapped, which gave me the symptoms of turn the key and nothing happens at all. We repaired this and it was OK again for a while.

A month or two after this it happened again, but on the third or fourth attempt it started and was fine again. We rechecked the repair - it seemed fine and so left it.

Tonight it happened again just after filling up! It took a go 30 attempts at turning the key to get it to start. It literally does nothing at all, no clicks... engine doesn't even try and turn over. Lights don't dim. It just sits there as though you didn't turn it. Anyway, it suddenly just fired up as normal again. I cancelled my plans and drove home, and it's starting every time again now (typical).

I am still getting this fault code though. Maybe it has something to do with this?

What's "Terminal 30"? Presumably it's telling me that J317 is the relay for it, and it's duff? Would this fault code cause the above issue?

Thanks :-)

Okay, I was rooting around under the drivers dash where all the relays are. What a silly design with the headlight plug / air con hose... I shredded my hands trying to get that back on. Doesn't seem to be an easy way to do it???

Anyway, I found relay 393 (I think that was the number) was loose. It pretty much just fell out. I pushed that in and it seemed to click in to place. It certainly wasn't coming out easily after that!

I cleared the fault with VCDS yesterday and will check when I get home later.

In addition to the previous post, I also had an ongoing issue with a bulb out warning light coming on randomly for a long time, even though all my bulbs are new.... this hasn't come on since I pushed that relay back *touch wood*. I did also have an issue where my keyfob didn't want to unlock the car every so often, but haven't had that happen for a while now anyway.

I'm really hoping that all of these issues are because of this relay. I'll let you know in a couple of days I guess!
