Skoda Fabia - EML and shudders

Featured Replies

I had put this on the introducton page, but thought it might be better here.....

''hi, i've browse the forums for info before but i can't seem to find anything on my current worry.

I've got a Fabia 1.2 53 plate, and the eml light came on and the car was shuddering immediately after changing into 3rd. Took the car to a local dealer and they were unable to diagnose the problem. They ended up saying the engine needed to be stripped to see if the problem was the cylinder head or if the engine needed decoking.

When they stripped the engine they say the cylinder head was ok, and they decoked the engine (this cost £840....... )

That was about 4-5 weeks ago, today the engine has major shudders in 2nd, then changing into 3rd and 4th, then the eml light comes on again...... having just spent a load out, i wondered if anyone had any idea what this new problem may be.

thanks.

i think i'm worried that i've paid out for un-necessay deckoing... ''

Someone has said it sounds like the EGR valve has gone, and i was wondering if this should have been spotted when the engine was apart for the decoking?

Thanks.

does it get worse if you put your foot down? My mates car was doing something similar, it turned out to be the coil but the EML didn't come on.

Did it go to a genuine Skoda dealer? - if so then they should have the facility to check the EGR valve by reading the diagnostic scan on their VAS machine. I'm always skeptical when I read about people having their engines decoked and so forth as these are high on labour cost and score low on being able to be verified subsequently.

Depending on where you are in Suffolk, try and get to a known reputable Skoda dealer (Robinsons in Norwich or ALS in Downham Market come to mind) and ask them to look at the car. I would avoid Vindis with a bargepole and the new one that opened in Ipswich recently seems to be the ex-Vindis people that crashed the previously successful Woolpit franchise. I would also bodyswerve Chequered Flag as they are more like Chequered Reputation these days.

it did a bit, but once i got going on the road at a steady 50 mph, it was running ok.

yes, i took it to the dealer where i purchased it originally, and i've had it from new.

they did the diagnositc scan, and they couldn't get a reading apparently, they said they tried it with a different 'reader' thingy (ok, girl term...) and scaned it but the machine still couldn't state the fault, which is why they said to strip the engine to check the cylinder and the decoking.

I think I'd be a bit peeved that they whipped the cylinder head off quite so quickly. Was there a rational explanation for doing this other than "oh it might need a de-coke"? Considering the number of other thingies ;) that can and do go wrong with these cars that seems a bit like taking advantage. Maybe a junior techy needed the experience for his NVQ?!

I think I'd be asking why I've paid £800 and my car isn't fixed.

when i phoned to say the light had come on again, i got 'oh well, it can be one of many things which make the light come on, it needs to be diagnosed.'
