Difficult to get into gear when cold

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've noticed over the last month or so that when the engine is cold it can be difficult or clunky to get into gear (especially gear 1-3, up and down).

Initially I thought the gear linkages might be worn but the problem goes away (or rather eases a lot) once then engine is up to temp.

Anyone experiences this before or have any idea what might be the cause?

Thanks

The engine idles faster when its cold so it puts more demand on the synchomesh. Still the synchomesh should cope with it.

Seen this before on a different make of car and it turned out to bean issue with the clutch not disengaging properly when the pedal was depressed, fitted a new clutch kit and all was well.

How old is the car? How many miles had it done?

Car is coming up on 4 year, 30,000 miles.

I've just realised I've still got a couple of months Skoda Approved Warranty on it too, get them to sort it :)

Would be nice to have more of an idea of what the issue is before hand.

In order to put 1st gear try this:

1. put 2nd gear

2. put 3rd gear

This is a common solution for synchronization in all WV group....

Not necessarily the right answer; but this is just the sort of age when the clutch slave cylinder could be starting to give up the ghost and could produce the symptoms described.

I did my MX5 slave a few months back, that had done 35,000 miles and was well shagged.

Usually a simple cheap job on most cars. Def worth a look.

I'd consider replacing the gearbox oil. Whilst VAG will tell you this is 'filled for life', I disagree.

I had mine replaced when I had the clutch changed last week and the change quality and cold start behaviour is vastly improved.

Given the mileage and age, its unlikely to be caused by general wear and tear and therefore should be covered under your warranty. I would tend to agree with Vectensian that it could be a problem with the slave cylinder.
