Steering rack... Service advisory

Featured Replies

Hello.

Just had my car serviced and they said the power steering was intermittent. I had noticed this but coulnt think what it was.

They said the fluid mayb bd low but it's fine.

Said it's leaking somewhere.

They recommend a new steering rack which according to them is £720 fitted.

This is from JKM.

Is there a cheaper alternative or replace?

When my rack was replaced (the 2004vRS) at a Skoda garage I was offered either a Skoda one or another one - quite a bit cheaper - I went with that but don't know what it was sorry

Only the pump or the sensor will make it intermittant, rack is mechanical and will either work or wont work emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Hmm.

Need to take it to another garage I think :/

anyway to test it's sensors?

Need to put some fluid in it but it's in a bitch of a place lol...

JKM are a well trusted forum sponsor on here, they could well be right of course.

Seems that fluid level is Ok, then said 'it's leaking somewhere?? - - - What???

Get a second opinion will cost you nothing.

Intermittent power-steering could be the electrical assistance breaking down, that assists power-steering,

ie low battery output when using power steering at low engine revolutions.

Normal steering at speeds above 10mph have you noticed any stiffness/ lightness. NO - YES ??

If no carry-on happy motoring and keep regular eye on power-steering fluid level.

Leaking power-steering oil from track rod inner gaiters or rack itself a sure pointer, that steering rack needs replacement.

Totally agree, replacement of steering rack and labour will be expensive.

Havent been able to check the fluid since its under the battery and not got the time atm.

I dont really notice its stiffness unless i turn quickly and sharply. Even then it doesnt bother me. Its just the service person that said about it tbh.

Any other ideas best to take it to? A normal garage or skoda?

Do they make like... radseal for PAS?

Just since MOT is in december and it will fail with the current issue they said.

EDIT: This is from the advisory sheet:

N/S rack leaking - suspest low on fluid (needs furthur investigation but possibly P.A.S rack.

cheaper place for a non genuine rack lol?

Would like to bump this :)

Need it sorted A.S.A.P.

Any more ideas?

Where can i buy a non genuine steering rack?

Can i use a non VRS rack on my 54 plate vrs?

Sorry Craig Lovelock, but think because of you being told this info about your steering,

you, (sorry), are getting a-little paranoid.

Relax, carry-on as normal, if there is something serious failing you will feel it through the steering at some point.

If car responds as normal, don't fret too much.

Steering becoming stiff to turn will be the most likely noticeable effect to alert you, or

if oil starts leaking from track control inner gaiters.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

If there's definitely a problem - and there seems to be - it needs to be sorted. Mine broke down 100 miles from home!

I've discovered the OP has started a new topic on the problem with his car HERE so I suggest people don't post in this one any more to obviate confusion/duplication...
