Upgrading the Yeti boot light

Featured Replies

On this thread Merlinman mentioned these lovely upgrades for the boot light. For your €29,99 you do get two lights in the set. So not wanting to waste one does anyone think it possible to wire in the right hand one FROM the left hand one? I'd imagine the wire can just run along the bottom of the boot from the one side to the other. OR Merlinman: do you think the one is powerful enough?

Perfect! Thanks!

The other option is of course if two Yeti owners buy one of these sets together and share the bulbs!

Well, at the price, it would seem a good idea to have a spare bulb (?) - even if it is not possible to fit both. The poor boot light is something I noticed, and the opportunity to do something about it is not to be missed! Thank you Merlinman and Johann for this information. Do we have experience of this site, BTW?

I have got 2 motorcycle LED DRL's that I intend to fit to mine, when I get the time!!

Re the site: I've bought a number of items from them; used Paypal, postage seems fair ; ordered Sunday, delivered Wednesday by postie - signature required. No problem at all...

That's good to know, thanks, nothing like experience - and I've ordered the boot light.

Thanks! Now that sure looks bright enough to my eyes! Even if it only comes from one side. I like and will order myself some of these pronto. I've never had so many extra bits ready for a car I don't even have in my posession yet!

I like this approach. Will anyone confirm that these lights are compatable with the socket on the original boot light?

I picked up two sets of bright battery powered LED lights from Lidl at £3.95 each (or was it £2.95 can't remember) Two are stuck on either side just below the parcel shelf and one on the parcel shelf itself. They work very well.

Thanks I will give it a go.

Do these LED lights just 'snap in' where the old bulbs have been removed, or do they need additional wiring etc..........?

Its raining here too :'(

It seems they are a total replacement for the current light unit and just snap in. Much better solution than trying to change the bulb.

Yep - they come with a short length of cable with a connector which links the factory loom to the light unit - simple push fit.

Temp mod done in my boot, just to see how they work.

Got a pair of motorbike LED DRL's and have fitted them either side, just under the cover, wired into the standard boot light. They give a good light but it only shines along the sides of the boot, so they need angling out a bit.

(sorry no photos, at work)

Hi folks - just thought I would let you know. My LED boot light arrived today, and I have just installed it. As Merlinman says, it's easy to fit. The lights come with a short wire and connectors that plug into the LED at one end, and the loom connector plugs into the other end. In fact, I didn't use it, as the loom connector plugs straight into the LED - and the shape of the plug means you cannot plug it in any way other than correct polarity.

However, the LED with the plug fitted sraight into it needs careful insertion into its recess to avoid damage - the plug makes it a big bulkier overall than the original. I think that that may be the reason the cable is supplied - I didn't try it, but I think it might make insertion easier. The reason I plugged the unit straight in was that the supplied connector seems to be able to plug in either way, regardless of polarity. I was concerned in case I damaged the LEDs if I got the polarity wrong. Anyway, I hope these notes might help others coming to this, and they can decide which way they want to play it when they come to do the job.

In fact, the LED unit was a very tight fit in the hole in the plastic trim. You need to insert the top first, and once it is pushed up fully, ease the bottom in. On mine, I had to ease the side of the top of the hole in the trim a tad - it's easy with care with a sharp blade (I used a small Stanley knife) - and to, similarly, take a tiny bit, less than 1/16 inch, out of the bottom of the slot to allow the bottom of the LED unit to push in. But once I had done that, it pushed in tightly and fits great - no-one could tell it was not original. BTW, it's the bottom of the unit that needs to be levered out first when removing the original unit - the plug prevents the top coming out first.

All my rambling above might make the job seem difficult - it wasn't - took only ten minutes or so, including figuring out I needed to add a bit of relief, and fetching a blade to do it.

It's light outside, so it is difficult to see the finished effect. But it sure looks bright in daylight: bright and pure white as LEDs would be. I am guessing, being LEDs, that consumption is likely to be tiny, too, and the LEDs should last a very long time! I hope so, but I have kept the other unit which is supplied as a spare, just in case. Can't wait to see what it looks like when fully dark!

Fantastic review and thanks for the tips. This is definitely on my list of things to do once the Monster has arrived.

BTW - I meant to thank Merlinman and Johann for putting me onto these in the first place!

Oh it was ALL Merlinman - I was just a messenger. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif If had to thank everyone on here for all the bits of knowledge I've learnt in the last near seven months, I'd have to thank, well, the ENTIRE forum! hehehe

Well, it's dark outside and the boot light is great. Not quite so impressive as the double installation picture, of course, but a huge improvement nonetheless, and I can now see quite adequately for what I need to do in the boot. The original is a poor dim thing indeed by comparison. I tried to take a picture, but I have a street lamp right next to the drive, the light from which seems to totally dominate the shot. I will try to get something when in a totally dark area at some stage. There is no doubt that installing another one on the right side - which I imagine is quite a simple job for anyone so inclined - would achieve spectacular results - with twice the amount of light. Wow.

Just had another thought - the LED unit has two female sockets on it, one above the other, piggy-back fashion. One is small with two contacts, and is what the supplied, tiny, connector plugs into. The other is bigger and is what the loom connector will plug straight into, if wanted. It occurs to me that, if the first light is plugged into the loom, the second could be 'piggy-backed' using the other socket (you even get two plugs to fit it) - providing a parallel connection presumably. I'm not an electrician, but I would suspect this is just what is needed to make the second LED work (?). I can't remember for sure, but I don't think the loom plug will interfere with doing this...

If that's the case, this is beginning to look so easy to do, in fact, I might even be tempted to have a go..

I would like to add my thanks to 900000 and Merlinman for pointing out the superskoda web site. My lights arrived yesterday and I replaced the existing boot light with one of the new ones this morning. What a difference!emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

The hole needed opening out slightly and 10 minutes with a craft knife - cutting - testing - cutting - fitting etc soon saw it located. I fitted the loom plug directly to the LED as there is plenty of clearance for the light to slot in.

I will keep the second one as a spare for the moment but I am sure that, by connecting the two small sockets with a length of wire will allow me to "daisy-chain" the second light to the first.

Encouraged by this thread I ordered a boot light upgrade as well. I did not have to use a knife, but was able to sqeeze the new light into the existing whole. The operation took around 2 minutes and most of the time was wasted because of freezing fingers (cold outside and no warm place to to the switch). The difference is really amazing, and I am wondering how Skoda is able to sell the sorry piece of illumination as "light"

Just a note on this: I've just orderered myself these lights and the price has dropped from €29.99 to just €18.99. That brings it to €25 all in including postage. Bargain!
