Tyre Advice (not what brand, honest)

Featured Replies

I need a new front tyre.

At the minute I've got T1R's on and they've been really sticky for the whole 7000 miles they've taken to get to 3mm! (They really, actually, genuinely are made of cheese, aren't they!?)

One sprang a very slow leak recently.. And on going to pump it up the other night I found a lovely screw head sticking out the top.. least it was the leaky one!

So on went the spare (after unloading all the Mrs's clothes, yup, SWMBO no longer has to BO'd... but that's a thread for another forum).

I noticed though that the out side shoulder was much more worn than the rest of the tyre. Measured it up and it's 3mm round the middle and inside edge.. it's just the outside shoulder that's worn? So it;s getting aligned at Browns tomorrow with a service.

... The Question, though... is.

Can you mix "types" of tyres as long as they're the same per axle? I don't just mean brand I mean grip style.. The Toyo's are directional type grip but I reckon these are noisy.. so I wanna go back to the band type grip pattern of a non directional, like the OE spare is, conti contact 2 or something?

The 2 T1R's on the back axle have tons a miles left in them though.. is it a bad idea to have radically different tread pattern / style / design from front to back or is it only an issue when you mix them on the same axle?

Oh, and one other little question.

The spare's never been used until now... It may even be from 2004 (it most likely is, actually)..

Could I buy one to match it... and stick a Cheapy Mc Cheaperson on the steel for the spare? Or does the Age effect it? It's not cracked at all, looks brand new.

annnnnnnddd, can ya mix speed ratings.. i.e. a V and a W ?

The law says -

Tyre Mixing

Must NOT have radial tyres on the front wheels and cross ply tyres on the rear wheels, it is also illegal to have a cross ply tyre on one side with a radial on the other.

All steerable axles must be fitted with tyres of the same construction, as must all driven axles that are not steerable.

That pretty much ties that one up then.. lol.

Rainsports it is then! hehe!

(unless they're last just as short a time.. eek?)

Wait... does that not mean I could put the T1R's from the rear onto the front.. and get radials for the back? That's legal, aint it?

Now to find a quiet tyre that likes the cold.

I thought ALL car tyres were now radial tyres ??

I think it means that you must use the same rating of radial tyre on an axle ( EG they must both be the same speed and load rating on an axle )

I think your right... though it's not obvious. THIS confirms though

On Camskill the T1R's construction is listed as "XL".. I thought it meant cross play but it seems the industry doesn't like cross ply anymore so it can't mean that??

Seems I can indeed stick what ever tyre I want on then? As it's the weave in the construction that's not to be mixed, and they are all radial now.

Been looking at some KU31's actually..

You're fine to have differet tyres on the front and rear as long as both front are the same and both rear are the same.

... but the speed rating should be W
