vRS Juddering

Featured Replies

Hello! I'd imagined my first post would be to say how happy I am with my new fabia, no joy unfortunately as its doing odd things already.

Driving to work this morning, heard a twanging noise, and now whenever I put my foot down the car judders- surges on the power then none, then back on again, repeatedly. It idles fine, sounds healthy when doing so, and it goes along fine with no/ a bit of throttle, but even when only a small amount of throttle is applied I get this problem.

Any ideas? Or is it going to be a costly trip to the garage? :dull:

I wonder if one of the boost pipe clips 'twanged' off? Are you getting an unusual amount of black smoke out the back on throttle?

Does it rev easily past about 3k revs in neutral?

I still get the drop in revs bit when in neutral and reving, but haven't checked past 3k revs, will give it a go. Forgot to say engine light isn't on, just bought the car privately so that may not mean anything, done about 200 miles trouble free since then though.

Where do the boost pipes run? New to this turbo diesel mallarky!

If it is a leaky boost pipe, it will most likely have come off at the bottom of the intercooler - best checked with the bumper off, or at a pinch turn steering wheel all the way to the left, remove the Torx screws along the front edge of the wheel arch liner, pull it back and grope about...

Not a bad idea to check even if it DOESN'T turn out to be that, as a total parting of the pipes will mean you're drawing unfiltered air into the engine (although a small leak will just mean a loss of boost pressure!)

I'll have a grope about in the dark later after work then. I'll let you know how it goes!

Just had another drive. Foot right down, doesn't come on boost past where it usually would. Just putting off going out cos its bloody baltic here!

Edit- Boost pipe off in predicted place, cheers man!

Any better connectors available, ones on all of the boost piping are proper bone by the look of it!

When my boost pipe went, it was the collar around the end of the pipe that sheared off rather than the clip itself. There are various ways to bodge it, or you can get a new section of boost pipe or an aftermarket hose set...

If we're talking about the same place (not sure since I accessed via the undertray not the wheelarch) this is what I did to hold the OEM clip in place - 2no hose-clips:

Bit of a bump. Think I have same problem. It seems okay in 1,2 gear but in 3rd when the turbo should kick in it judders and feels it's losing traction... But it's just got no power.

I can hardly hear the turbo spooling when driving and in idle it sounds airy and odd.

Will have a good look tomoz in the light but best bet is the lower intercooler pipe?

Glad you got it sorted and it was a simple fix :-)

Ah yeah, could be your boost pipe too (just replied in your other thread, I think boost pipe is probably more likely). I believe it's usually the lower intercooler pipe that pops off. Never had it happen to me, but plenty of people have it happen.

I doubt its that tbh mate. My car was acting bizarrely in every gear and juddering really badly.
