Exhaust Back Box

Featured Replies

Right my back box is on the way out, went under the car today and I'm surprised it went through MOT to be honest.

Anyway, I'm looking to replace the back box with a straight exhaust pipe (no back box/siliencer) has anyone does this? is it too loud? any problems with MOT etc?

i have a remus aftermarket one if you are interested?

Thats exactly what I was looking for! thanks mate!

its deff worth doing, i have had the the rear box removed and replaced with 2 3" pipes plus a decat and it sounds sweet, plus no problems with the mot

No problems with MOT if backbox and/or cat is missing...? Where was I reading then when it said it was a fail if part of exhaust was missing or damaged? :(

New EU MOT Regulations which come into force from 1/1/11, but there is a legitimate way it can be done if the replacement unit also conforms to the relevant legislation which is why you very often see the TÜV symbol on German tuner's websites, It basically means they have spent money with a Nationally Recognised Authority (as stated in the EU Regulations) and that therefore their equipment will pass the new harmonised MOT test. It is one reason why German remaps are sooooo expensive - ABT, MTM and Sportec are all £1000+ if I recall correctly.

I have no idea how you would do it in the UK - probably through one of those places that does the approval on imported Japanese cars maybe?

Certainly, if I was a UK tuner, I'd be doing my homework and working out a charging policy for unmapping cars (or selling STS units).

no worries mate emoticon-0148-yes.gif

That is correct. however it only applies if you leave the back box off and do nothing else.

The OP wants to replace the box with a straight pipe. This makes the exhaust complete again.

Unless the new system is now too noisy ( noise is subjective and varies between testers ) - it will pass an MOT

ive had mine done for years, been brilliant.

Was looking to do this myself, couple of companies quoted around £90-120 to replace with a straight thru s/s pipe and choice of tail , but im a bit tight so not done anything about it yet emoticon-0136-giggle.gif
