5W-30 Oil query..

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Having discovered some facts about oil on another thread, could someone answer me this.

If I own a litre of 5W-30 Oil (fully synthetic). Can I put it in both a petrol and diesel engine or is it engine specific?

Cheers

Hello there....

A couple of weeks ago I had to buy some oil to top the engine and got thrown into a mayhem of conversions and diesel/petrol issues. The answer is yes.

My car uses oil graded VW 501 01, VW 502 00, and after asking half a country it turns out the equivalent is 5W-30 Full Synthetic. To my surprise is the same oil used on some diesel engines.

This was validated with the VW distributor, Skoda distributor and Seat distributor. None of them are the same company in this country, plus had a reply form VW Brazil and told me the same.

P.S. My car is on fixed maintenance intervals.

Hope it helps. Cheers.

It does! Thank you very much.

But as has been previously said, if it does not have the relevant VW50x.xx that the car needs then you would be either a very brave or foolish man to use it.

Whilst we are on the subject of 5w-30 oil...I'm in the market for 5l. Any good oil out there for a good price??

Hi mate,

I saw Halfrauds doing 5L tubs of Mobil 1 for £50 with a free Golf Umbrella.

Better than a kick in the spuds.. :smirk:

Just had a quick mooch around online; plenty of Shell Helix Ultra Extra & Quantum III long life oil, selling for reasonable prices. Are they much of a muchness? One better than the other?

There are also cheaper oils around that meet the VW507.00 specification. I recently bought ,German made, synthetic Pennasol at £30 for 5 l. Better than £20 for one litre of Castrol Edge on the M1....
