Octavia II Gearbox noise

Featured Replies

Hi, I have an Octavia II 2.0PD 140 with 98k and have noticed a noise on lift off in 5th gear only. If I get to about 60mph in 5th and let go of the throttle I hear a bit of a whining noise then the noise slowly tapers off when the engine drops below 50mph however i can still hear a slight noise.

Many gearboxes make that noise. My 1.6 tdi makes it about the same speed, my other car Megane 1.9 dci from new made that noise and alot worse.

I recently asked the dealer about this and the answer was" It´s Normal"

Soo I guess you can say it´s normal.

Good hearing :giggle:

Not nomal and I would not put up with it. Get it sorted...

I think the noise noise he´s talking about is a slight noise that only happens at about that speed ( between 50-60mph and in fifth gear( or 6 gear), on lower or higher speeds it goes away.

Changing gears are smooth and like I said you can hear it if you are concentraded on hearing it, no radio and no others :giggle: with you.

Could you define "whining" a bit more precisely?

It's very difficult to describe the noise, i'm going to take it to my local skoda dealer tomorrow and see what they say.

If it's whooooooooo sort of noise than it's ok. I've had this noise in many many cars and I think it's normal.

If it has any hrrrrrrr or frrrrrr or anything remotely reminding a grinding noise, than it's a problem.

I hope what I said is clear... :)

I have the same problem with my 2004 Octy 2.0 PD 140ps. The sound is very much like a turbo whine in reverse. It started on mine about a year a half ago, I took it too my local garage who told me that the bearings in 5th were worn out hence the problem. I have looked into getting a new gearbox to resolve the issue, but this is very expensive, so I have solved the problem myself...I don't use 5th anymore. :giggle:

Well I've had nothing like you describe on any of the cars I've owned, so I certainly wouldn't put it in the 'it's normal' category.

'Normal' used in this way is certainly misleading.
