Hi

I am hoping someone is able to help me interpret my diagnostic for my Fabia 2002.

Over the last three years the car battery has been replaced three times and during the last 6mths we have had 2 new alternators.

The problems vary from having difficulty starting the car as it is totally dead and/or power steering become heavy when reversing out in the mornings and it is difficult to manoevre with warning lights appearing on the panel.

A new alternator was fitted in March and at that time a heat resistor pack was also installed for the aircon, I think this might have caused a new problem.

The aircon seems to work when driving when the control is set at 0. Also if the temperature gauge is on a warmer setting but off then hotter air blows out .

Last weekend the car wouldn't start so I charged it overnight and it has has been working well all week.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a royal PITA to diagnose. Have you cleared all the fault codes since the last piece of work was done? If not, clear them, and rescan periodically and whenever anything goes wrong.

If you hadn't reported any other symptoms, I'd have said the codes were probably all caused by disconnecting the battery. However, they're all voltage-related so it sounds like you have either:

- an intermittent short

or

- an intermittent high-impedance connection (=dodgy connection - probably lose or corroded)

The intermittent nature of it makes it difficult. You're probably going to have to get friendly with a multimeter and go around measuring voltages and impedances (=resistances in this context) until you find something that looks "wrong". Then start unplugging things to isolate the problem.

Last time I had a peculiar problem like this, it turned out to be a short to ground inside the starter motor. The solenoid had literally bashed its way through the casing and until it touched the metal case (=ground) whenever I turned the key.

Good luck!

I'd start with checking the battery leads, starter lead and engine earth strap for a good, clean connection.

Isn't there some history of dodgy connections to the fuse box on top of the battery on these?

Dunno, but I think I've heard of it with some VAG models, so possibly.
