Diesel spill

Featured Replies

On my way out into N.Wales this morning, Road was very damp.

Came up to the famous (around here) and extremely busy 2 Mills traffic lights, the gateway to N.Wales, and very popular with bikers out for their Sunday blast up to the Ponderosa 'greasy spoon' on the top of the famous Horseshoe Pass near Llangillen.

As I pulled away, the van wheels started spinning, which is most unusual.

It was only then that I noticed the tell tale rainbow trail on the surface. Could actually smell it too.

Without hesitation, I rang 999 to report it .

Got through to the rozzer desk and was then asked for name address etc, and had their actually been an accident?

I told him no, I was ringing to hopefully prevent one though, and suggested they get some signs up or get the council out with some sand.

I dunno, but I felt as though he may have thought I was wasting their time. Just his tone of voice indicated that to me.

Granted it wasn't actually an ongoing emergency at that actual moment, but could well have been pending.

Followed 'the trail' for a good 5 miles onto the busy A55 coast road btw.

Came back 2.5 hours later, and no signs or evidence of sand being laid down.

I think its time we had another number for slightly less urgent calls that can easily be used in these sort of cases.

Some random non urgent 0845 number is just ridiculous, and cannot be remembered by most.

Anyhow, I assume nobody has been killed or injured due to this spillage?

Best to report it than not. Down here in Weymouth we have a non-emergency police number (10305 222222), which is perfect for those sorts of calls. Essentially we are told call 999 if the crime is happening, and the other number if it isn't. The call still gets logged with the police and delt with. One morning when I drove to work, I noticed about 6 or 7 cars down my road had had their windows smashed. I made the call as I thought it might pre-empt the police doing something rather than them getting 6-7 phone calls an hour or two later when everyone else headed off to work.

A quick google has generated this list:

I'd have thought you did the right thing. Could have been messy if some bikes came onto that.

I keep the 'local' number for Police programmed in my mobile for times like this. Not having access to the local number though, I think you did the right thing.

Theres no two ways about it. You did the right thing. 999 is for any situation where there is a risk to you or other people around you. I have rung 999 on 2 occasions in last 6 months - once for a guy walking next to lane 3 of A3 in hammersmith during rush hour. Was anyone hurt? no. Was there a crime in progress? well priobably. He had potential to do harm to himself and/or cause a crash. second was a sheep on the hard shoulder of a motorway in scotland. no crime, no hurt but again huge risk.

Dont worry.best to report it and then its up to them. Covers your back in terms of guilt!
